Coast Guard Tops Baseball, 9-1

New London, Conn. - Senior Eric Gerken was 4 for 5 with an RBI and three runs scored while classmate Nolan Gallagher was 3 for 5 with a pair of RBI's and two runs scored leading Coast Guard to a 9-1 win over Framingham State in a non-conference baseball game this afternoon.

Senior James Diddell (1-1) got the win for Coast Guard in a game that saw the two teams combine to use 14 pitchers. Diddell, designated as the pitcher of record before the game, threw four scoreless innings allowing just two hits with one walk and one strikeout. Sophomores Anthony Martin, Andrew Lucak and Dylan Wright along with senior Derek Petty all threw hitless innings for the Bears.

Framingham freshman starter Dillon Corliss (Winterport, ME) (0-2), one of eight Ram pitchers in the game, was touched for a run on two hits in the first inning and took the loss.

Coast Guard got single runs in the first and third innings with Gallagher delivering an RBI single in the first and Gerken scoring on a throwing error in the third for a 2-0 lead.

The Bears scored three in the fifth as Gerken led off with a double, Gallagher followed with an RBI single before senior Ed Sella ripped an RBI double. Sophomore Tim Betts' RBI single pushed the lead to 5-0.

The Rams scored their only run of the game in the sixth on an RBI single by senior Will Crofton (Hopkinton, Mass.) scoring senior Justin Forman (Watertown, Mass.), who singled.

Coast Guard added four insurance runs in the eighth on an RBI single by Gerken, before both senior Mike Massaro and Betts were hit by pitches with the bases loaded. Sophomore Matt Hanks added an RBI on an error to close the scoring.

Senior Tyler Babkiewich and freshman Mark Behne also added two hits for Coast Guard which finished with 16 hits and improved to 16-10 on the season.

Forman and junior Anthony Iafolla (Medfield, Mass.) each had two hits for Framingham State which dropped to 8-15 on the season.

The Bears are back in action on Saturday with a doubleheader at MIT beginning at noon. Coast Guard will host MIT at home on Sunday at noon in the third and final game of the weekend series.

The Rams will host Worcester State on Saturday afternoon for a MASCAC doubleheader beginning at 1 p.m.
