Baseball Falls to UMass Boston 9-3

Malden, Mass. – Sophomore Will Barrack (Lancaster, Va.) tossed seven scoreless innings as the University of Massachusetts Boston baseball team defeated the Framingham State University Rams 9-3 in non-conference action this evening at Malden Catholic High School.

With the win, the Beacons improve to 10-8 on the year, while the Rams fall to 11-9.

The Beacons jumped on the board in the top of the first inning with three runs.  Junior Matt Consiglio (Southbury, Conn.) plated the first with a deep sacrifice fly to left and freshman Charles LaPaglia (Marshfield, Mass.) followed with an RBI single to right.  Freshman Jack DeBiase (Prospect, Conn.) drove in the final run in the inning with an RBI single to center.

UMass Boston extended their lead to 5-0 in the top of third as they capitalized on a pair of Ram errors for a pair of unearned runs.  Consiglio scored on a bunt that was misplayed in the Rams infield and Debiase drove in his second run of the game with a sacrifice fly to left. Two more in the fourth pushed the Beacons lead to 7-0.

Barrack cruised through the first six inning surrendering just one hit, striking out seven, and allowing only three base runners.  The Rams were able to load the bases with two outs in the seventh on a base hit from junior Will Crofton (Hopkinton, Mass.), a walk and hit batter, but Barrack was able to record a strikeout to end the inning.

Two runs in the eighth for the Beacons with one coming on an RBI single off the bat of Mike Mattei (Spencer, Mass.) pushed the lead to 9-0.

The Rams got to the UMass bullpen for three runs in the eighth inning as they loaded the bases on a pair of walks and a single to center by Crofton.  After a strikeout, senior Pedro Acevedo (Fall River, Mass.) plated all three runs with a double that landed just inside the right field line.

Barrack recorded the victory going seven innings allowing no runs on two hits with eight strikeouts.  Senior Mark McCormack (Shelton, Conn.) was 4-of-6 at the plate for the Beacons, while LaPaglia went 3-for-4 with two RBI and DiBiase went 1-for-4 with a pair of RBI.

Acevedo and Crofton led the Rams with two hits apiece, while Acevedo knocked in three.  Junior Felipe Barahona (Lynn, Mass.) started for the Rams and picked up the loss as he allowed six runs, four earned, on seven hits in three innings of work.

The Rams return to action on Thursday with a non-conference game against Keene State, while the Beacons travel to Western New England on Wednesday at 3:30 p.m.
