Baseball Takes Two From UMass Boston

Waltham, Mass. – Senior Pedro Acevedo (Fall River, Mass.) belted a team-best six hits, three RBI and two runs scored as the Framingham State University baseball team swept a non-conference twinbill this afternoon against the University of Massachusetts Boston at Yetten Field.  The Rams blanked the Beacons in the first game 5-0 and came from behind for a 2-1 victory in the night cap.

With the victories, the Rams even their season record at 7-7, while the Beacons fall to 6-5.

Senior Chris Cole (Lynn, Mass.) also had a solid day at the plate for the Rams as he combined for four hits and a run scored.

The Rams received solid pitching in both games with sophomore Matt DiCato (Winthrop, Mass.) earning the victory in game one and freshman Ryan Bowen (Hudson, Mass.) tossed a complete game to earn the victory in game two.  The two pitchers combined for nine strikes and surrendered just 10 hits in the two goals with only one run allowed.

In the opener, UMass Boston sophomore Jamil Moquette (Boston, Mass.) posted two of the Beacons six hits and right Daniel Heefner (Tracy, Calif.) went six innings allowing four runs on six hits en route to the loss.

The Rams got on the score board in the second inning of the opener following an RBI double from sophomore Anthony Iafolla (Medfield, Mass.) which plated Acevedo who had walked earlier in the inning.

Framingham State extended their lead to 2-0 in the top of the fifth as freshman Cam Couillard (North Andover, Mass.) drove in Cole with an RBI groundout.  Cole had tripled to right to lead off the inning.

A pair of unearned runs in the sixth on RBI hits from Acevedo and Iafolla and a single run in the seventh on an RBI single to right from junior Will Crofton (Hopkinton, Mass.) rounded out the scoring in game one for the Rams.

In game two, the Beacons took the early lead with a run in the bottom of the first inning on an RBI single from Matt Consiglio (Southbury, Conn.).

The Beacons would maintain the slim advantage until the top of the fourth inning when the Rams scored a pair of runs to secure the victory.  Crofton walked to lead off the inning and sophomore Ivan Colon (Waltham, Mass.) followed with a one-out single.  After a groundout, Acevedo scored both runs with a two RBI single.

Lucas Ilges (Gloucester, Mass.) picked up the loss tossing a complete game striking out four and allowing two runs on six hits.

The Rams return to action on Sunday at Brandeis at 1 p.m.
