UMass Boston Defeats Baseball 12-5

Framingham, Mass. – Senior Connor Reinfurt (Manchester, NH) went 4-for-5 with three RBI and a pair of homeruns to lead the University of Massachusetts Boston baseball team to a 12-5 non-conference win today over Framingham State University at Bowditch Field.

With the win the Beacons improve their record to 17-18, while the Rams are now 17-19.

UMass Boston capitalized on six Framingham State errors in the game to score six unearned runs, while the Rams could not get a hit in key situations as they left 17 runners on the bases.

The Beacons grabbed a 4-0 lead in their first at bat of the game.  Ty Buccetti (Wallingford, Conn.) led off the game with a ground rule double to left center and came around to score a batter later on a throwing error by the Rams.  After an out, senior Connor Reinfurt (Manchester, NH) launched a two run homerun to center.  Dan Gambill (Lake Worth, Fla.) reached on another FSU error in the Rams infield and scored the Beacons fourth run when he stole third and the throw sailed into leftfield allowing him to take home.  The Rams three errors led to three unearned runs in the first off freshman starting pitcher Matthew DiCato (Winthrop, Mass.).

The Rams got a run back in the bottom of the second as Danny Chaisson (Watertown, Mass.) and Chris Brassard (Fitchburg, Mass.) walked with one out. Junior Chris Blydell (Lynn, Mass.) followed with an RBI single to right driving in Chaisson.  Sophomore Will Crofton (Hopkinton, Mass.) reached on an error giving the Rams first and second with one out, but a double play ball ended the threat.

The Beacons added a single run in the fifth on a sacrifice fly by Gambill to push their lead to 5-1.  Framingham answered with a pair of runs in the bottom of the inning on an RBI blooper to left off the bat of Jason Hutchinson (Kingston, Mass.) and a sacrifice fly by Chaisson to pull within two at 5-3.

The Beacons capitalized on a pair of Rams errors in the sixth to score an unearned run and another error in the seventh to score two more to extend their lead to 8-3.  UMass Boston added four more in the eighth on a pair of homeruns.  Reinfurt led off the inning with his second of the game, this one a solo shot to left center and sophomore Nick Grassetti (Agawam, Mass.) cleared the bases with a three run homer to center.

The Rams added a single run in the eighth as senior Corey Ketterer (Plymouth, Mass.) scored on a wild pitch and a single run in the ninth on an RBI single from junior pinch hitter Chris Cole (Lynn, Mass.) to reach the final margin of 12-5.

Freshman Matt Dziok (Southampton, Mass.) picked up the win for the Beacons in relief going 2.1 innings and allowing two runs, both earned, on four hits.  DiCato picked up the loss for the Rams tossing 6.2 innings and allowing eight runs, two earned, on seven hits.

Blydell was the only Ram to record multiple hits in the game as he doubled in the first and single in the second.

The Beacons return to action tomorrow at Wheaton at 3:30 p.m.
