Baseball Takes Two from Mass. Maritime

Framingham, Mass. – The Framingham State University baseball team swept a Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference (MASCAC) doubleheader over the Massachusetts Maritime Academy Buccaneers today at Bowditch Field.  The Rams came from behind with four runs in the bottom of the sixth inning to win game one 11-8 and then capitalized on three homeruns to take the night cap 8-1.        

With the two victories, the Rams improve to 12-9 on the year and 3-1 in the MASCAC, while the Buccaneers drop to 7-8 overall and 2-2 in conference.

In game one, the Rams jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the bottom of the first as freshman Matt Roberge (Lowell, Mass.) launched a solo homer to left center and Will Crofton (Hopkinton, Mass.) and Jason Hutchinson (Kingston, Mass.) each drove in runs with RBI hits.

Mass. Maritime answered with four in the top of the second to take their first lead of the game (4-3).  The Buccaneers loaded the bases with no outs on a Rams throwing error and a pair of walks.  Corey Murphy (East Wareham, Mass.) plated the Bucs first run on an RBI ground out and catcher William Shouldice (Rutland, Vt.) followed with a three run blast to center.

The Rams retook the lead (5-4) in the bottom of the third on a two run homerun to right by Hutchinson, but Mass. Maritime reclaimed the lead in the top of the fifth.  Tyler Genereux (Duxbury, Mass.), Nick Levitre (Grafton, Mass.) and Greg Wiggin (Marshfield, Mass.) all picked up RBI singles and Aram Mulhern (Taunton, Mass.) stole home as part of a double steal to put the Bucs up 8-5.

The Rams pulled within one (8-7) in the bottom of the fifth as they capitalized on two Mass. Maritime fielding errors to score two unearned runs.

After holding the Buccaneers scoreless in the top of the sixth, the Rams scored four runs in the bottom of the inning to take an 11-8 lead.  Crofton drove in a pair of runs with an RBI single through the right side to put the Rams ahead 9-8.  Justin Forman (Watertown, Mass.) drew a bases loaded walk to score the Rams third run of the inning and senior Joe Sheehan (Burlington, Mass.) plated the fourth with a sacrifice fly to left.

Freshman Matthew DiCato (Winthrop, Mass.) tossed 2.2 innings of scoreless relief allowing only three hits en route to his fourth win of the season.  Junior Ryan Stoller (Milton, Mass.) started on the hill for the Rams going 4.1 innings and allowing eight runs, seven earned, on seven hits with four strikeouts and a walk.

Freshman Nick Thomas (Brockton, Mass.) picked up the loss for Mass. Maritime going 2/3 of an inning and allowing four runs, all earned, on two hits.

Senior Tommy Lindberg (Stratford, Conn.) was the story in game two picking up the complete game victory which improves his season record to 4-1.  Lindberg allowed one run on a solo home run to right by Shouldice in the fifth inning and surrendered only four hits in the game to go along with a pair of walks and three strikeouts.

The Rams took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first as junior Chris Blydell (Lynn, Mass.) led off with a single to left and came around to score on an RBI single to center from catcher Sean Callahan (Watertown, Mass.).  Blydell extend the Rams lead to 2-0 in the bottom of the third with a solo homer to center.

The Rams opened the game up in the bottom of the fifth with six runs including back-to-back homeruns from Callahan and Crofton.  Callahan drove in three with his blast to left and Crofton followed with a solo shot driving Mass. Maritime starting pitcher Genereux from the game.  The Rams added two more runs in the inning on an RBI double by Chris Brassard (Fitchburg, Mass.).

Genereux picked up the loss for the Buccaneers going four innings and allowing six runs on 11 hits including three homeruns by the Rams. 

The Rams return to action on Tuesday as they face Fisher College at Fraser Field in Lynn at 7 p.m., while the Buccaneers also return to action on Tuesday as they entertain Emerson at 3:30 p.m.
