Baseball Falls at Johnson & Wales

Baseball Falls at Johnson & Wales

East Providence, R.I. – The Johnson & Wales baseball team defeated Framingham State, 16-15 in a non-conference contest at Pierce Field on Wednesday afternoon.

After a scoreless first, Johnson & Wales broke got on the board in the bottom of the second with five runs, including a two-run single by Coppola to put the Wildcats up 5-0.

Framingham State cut into the lead in the top of the third when a two-run home run by junior Chris Blydell (Lynn, Mass.) made the score 5-2.  An RBI double by junior Chris Brassard (Fitchburg, Mass.) in the top of the fourth cut the lead to 5-3.

Framingham State then took their first lead of the game on a three-run triple by freshman Matt Roberge (Lowell, Mass.) to put the team up 6-5.  The Rams added four more runs in the frame, including a three-run double by senior Sean Callahan (Watertown, Mass.) for the 10-5 score.

In the bottom of the fourth, Johnson & Wales responded with five runs of their own, including a two-run double by senior Matt Yaeger (Glendale, Ariz.) to knot the game at 10-10.  The Wildcats regained the lead in the bottom of the fifth when Yaeger scored on an RBI single by sophomore Zach Boyes (West Warwick, R.I.) to put JWU up 11-10.

Once again, Framingham responded and tied the game at 11-11 after Callahan hit a one out single and scored on a fly ball by Brassard.  The visiting Rams regained the lead in the top of the eighth as a two run single to deep center field by senior Danny Chaisson (Watertown, Mass.) gave the squad the 13-11 advantage.

In the bottom of the eighth, Boyes led off with a double and came around to score on a sacrifice fly by sophomore Pete Rosa (Ambler, Pa.) to make score 13-12.  The Wildcats would then tie the game at 13-13 on an RBI single by senior Bryan Sayers (Chelmsford, Mass.) and took the 14-13 lead when Sayers scored on a double to left center by freshman Jake Dickerson (Garnet Valley, Pa.).  JWU then added a run as Dickerson came around to score on sophomore Tyler Newell's (Westerly, R.I.) RBI single and capped off the scoring for JWU as Newell scored on an RBI single by senior Nick Alosco (Mahopac, N.Y.) to put the Wildcats up 16-13.

Framingham had one last rally, however, and cut the lead to 16-15 on a two run single by Callahan in the top of the ninth.  It would not be enough, however, as JWU held on for the 16-15 victory.

Freshman Remy Cohen (Atlantic Highlands, N.J.) recorded his second win of the season with one and two third innings of relief.

Alosco was 4-for-6 with two runs and two RBI for Johnson & Wales while Dickerson and Yaeger each had three hits in the victory for the Wildcats.

Callahan was 4-for-6 with five RBI for Framingham State while Ketterer was 3-for-4 with two runs and an RBI in the loss for the Rams.

With the win JWU is now 5-8 overall while Framingham State is 5-7 for the season. The Wildcats will return to action on Friday, March 25th when they host UMass Dartmouth for a non-conference contest beginning at 3:00 p.m., while the Rams travel to Brandeis for a pair of games on Sunday at noon.
