Baseball Drops Season Opener 4-3 to Spalding

Winter Haven, Fla.   – The Framingham State University baseball team opened the 2011 season this afternoon with a 4-3 loss to Spalding (KY) at the RussMatt Central Florida Invitational.

Senior Matthew Magazine (Marlborough, Mass.) started on the hill for the Rams and went six innings allowing one run on five hits.  Magazine, who did not earn a decision, struck out six batters while only walking two.

The game was tied 1-1 heading into the eighth inning when Spalding scored three runs to take a 4-1 lead.   The Rams battled back in the ninth with two runs on a two out homerun by senior Sean Callahan (Watertown, Mass.) that cut the lead to 4-3, but that was as close as they would get as Spalding was able to record the final out.  The Rams stranded 14 runners on base in the game.

Freshman Tom Simas (Cambridge, Mass.) picked up the loss as he went two innings allowing three earned runs on three hits with two walks.

Callahan went 2-for-5 in the game with two RBI, while junior Chris Blydell (Lynn, Mass.) was also 2-for-5 with a run scored and a pair of doubles.  Senior Corey Ketterer (Plymouth, Mass.) also picked up a pair of hits in the game.

The Rams return to action tomorrow as they face Daniel Webster College in a doubleheader beginning at 9:30 a.m.
