Baseball Sweeps Salem - Rams Top 20 Win Mark
Salem, Mass. – Steven Tramontozzi (Watertown, Mass.)
produced three RBI in the Framingham State College Rams 4-3 and 1-0
sweep of the Salem State Vikings in a Massachusetts State College
Athletic Conference (MASCAC) doubleheader this afternoon at the
Salem State baseball field.
The Rams improve to 21-14 on the season and have reached the 20 win
plateau for the first time since 1997 and also improve to
9-3 in the MASCAC which puts them in second place pending the
outcome of the remaining conference games that were postponed
today. The Vikings season record now stands 16-8 and 3-9 in
the conference.
Mike Cain (Gloucester, Mass. earned the save in the seventh inning
of game one to seal a 4-3 victory over the Vikings and
starting pitcher Joe Quinn (Assonet, Mass.) earned his third win of
the season as he struck out three batters and allowed two runs in
six innings of work.
Joe Galindo (Monument, CO), 4-7, was handed the loss in his 4 2/3
innings pitched as he allowed four runs on four hits with seven
walks.
The Vikings got off to an early lead with a pair of first inning
RBI singles from Ryan Kane (Nahant, Mass.) and Sam Perkins
(Milford, Mass.). Perkins was 2-for-3 with an RBI and one run
scored in game one.
Galindo’s command faltered in the fourth inning. Galindo
walked in two runs with the bases loaded in the inning. Tramontozzi
singled up the middle to score two more Rams. Salem State reliever
Ryan Sharp (Townsend, Mass.), who pitched 2 2/3 innings of
scoreless relief, came on and recorded the last out of the
inning.
Evan Valcourt’s (Salisbury, Mass.) fielder’s choice in
the sixth scored Perkins to cut the Framingham lead to one. Cain
entered for the Rams to face the top of the Viking lineup in the
bottom of seventh inning and promptly retired the side in order to
record the save.
In the second game, junior Matthew Magazine (Marlborough, Mass.)
improved to 4-0 on the season with his complete game shutout
victory. Magazine struck out five, walked four and surrendered only
four hits.
Matt Kerr (East Freetown, Mass.) received the loss and is now 4-3
on the season as he allowed one run on seven hits in five
innings.
Kerr faced a bases loaded situation in the bottom of the second
inning but was able to get out of the jam with a great defensive
play. Salem State second baseman Chris Cocci (Wakefield, RI) saved
at least two runs with a diving snag of a grounder hit up the right
side of the infield by Justin Wojcik (Dracut, Mass.). Cocci made
the throw to first base from his knees for the force out to end the
Framingham threat.
Tramontozzi’s third inning RBI single proved to be the only
run of the game. He finished his day going 4-for-5 from the plate
with three RBI.
The Rams return to action tomorrow with a non-conference game at
Rhode Island College at 3:30 p.m.
