Baseball Downs Newbury 9-1

Baseball Downs Newbury 9-1

Framingham, MA - Sophomore Matthew Magazine (Marlborough, MA) tossed a complete game allowing one unearned run on six hits as the Framingham State College baseball team picked up a 9-1 win today over Newbury College at Brandeis University.  The Rams improve to 10-22 on the season, which is the most wins in a season since 2003, while the Nighthawks fall to 6-27 on the season.

Newbury took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first as junior William Maddock (Marshfield, MA) reached on an error and came around to score on an RBI double to left from freshman Alex Chetelat (Farmington, CT).  That was the only run the Nighthawks would be able to push across as Magazine allowed just five hits over the final eight innings.

The Rams took the lead for good in the second inning as they pushed across two runs.  Junior Ryan McCarthy (Shrewsbury, MA) reached on an error and advanced to second as sophomore Joe Sheehan (Watertown, MA) drew a walk.  After back-to-back strikeouts, freshman Chris Cole (Lynn, MA) singled to right scoring McCarthy and junior Dave Leach (Chelmsford, MA) singled home Sheehan.

The Rams added single runs in the fourth on an RBI single from freshman Matt Urban (Malden, MA) and fifth on a homer to right by sophomore Jason Hutchinson (Kingston, MA).  They tacked on two more in the sixth on RBI singles by catcher Sean Callahan-Montague (Watertown, MA) and Hutchinson.  They added another single run in the seventh on an RBI double by Cole.

Cole finished the game 3-for-4 with a double, a triple and two RBI, while Hutchinson finished 3-for-5 with a homer and two RBI.  Leach added two hits and an RBI.

Freshman Andrew Lundebjerg (Berlin, CT) had two hits for the Nighthawks.  Freshman Curran Shane (Bedford, NH) picked up the loss as he went the distance on the mound allowing nine runs (five earned) on thirteen hits while striking out eight.

The Rams return to action on Tuesday night as they face Lasell College at Brandeis University at 7 p.m., while the Nighthawks close out their season at Massachusetts Maritime Academy tomorrow at 3 p.m.
