Baseball Splits Two With Massachusetts Maritime

Framingham, MA - The Framingham State College baseball team split a Massachusetts State College Athletic Conference (MASCAC) double header today in Framingham at Bowditch Field with the Massachusetts Maritime Academy Buccaneers.  Mass. Maritime head baseball coach Bob Corradi picked up his 500th career win as the Buccaneers (7-10, 2-4 MASCAC) defeated Framingham State 8-0 in game one, while the Rams, who improve to 2-4 in the MASCAC and 6-16 overall, won the second game 2-1.

Junior David Hike (Riverview, FL) hurled a gem in the opener as he had a no hitter going into the bottom of the seventh and only allowed four base runners up to that point.  Sophomore outfielder J.J. Sorensen (Westerly, RI) broke up his bid with a single up the middle in to lead off the bottom of the seventh.  Hike went the distance allowing one hit, walking striking out four and walking three to even his season record at 3-3.

Mass. Maritime took the lead for good in the top of the third innings as freshman Nick Montalto (South Yarmouth, MA)  belted a two-run homer to right that drove in sophomore first baseman Corey Murphy (East Wareham, MA), who had reached on an error.

The Buccaneers would tack on two more in the top of the fourth as freshman catcher William Shouldice (Rutland, VT) hit a two-run homer to center that drove in sophomore Ross Hickey (Centerville, MA), who had led off the inning with a single to left.

In the top of the fifth Mass. Maritime added another run as senior Mark Mozelak (New Hartford, CT) singled to left and scored on Tyler Spofford's (Sharon Springs, NY) single to center.  They added two more unearned runs in the top of the sixth on RBI singles from Montalto and Mozelak.

Senior Matt Nicholson picked up the loss on the mound for the Rams as he pitched 5.2 innings allowing eight runs (three earned) on eight hits while striking out four and walking two.

In game two, the Buccaneers took an early 1-0 lead in the top of the first as Montalto reached on a Framingham error and came around to score on Spofford's RBI single thru the left side.  That was the only run the Buccaneers would manage in the game as Framingham starting pitcher Matt Magazine (Marlborough, MA) allowed the one unearned run and scatted six hits in seven solid innings of work.  Magazine struck out six and only walked two.

The Rams tied the game in the bottom of the third inning as sophomore catcher Sean Callahan-Montague (Watertown, MA) led the inning off with a single and advanced to second as junior outfielder Dave Leach (Chelmsford, MA) was able to work a walk.  Sophomore outfielder Steven Tramontozzi (Watertown, MA) doubled to center and drove Callahan home to knot the game at 1-1.

Framingham State took the lead for good in the bottom of the fourth.  Freshman infielder Matt Urban (Malden, MA) singled up the middle and advanced to second on a wild pitch.  After a walk and a fielder's choice that advanced Urban to third, sophomore second baseman George Schriener (Valley Stream, NY) belted a double to right that scored Urban with what proved to be the winning run.

Sophomore Nick Levitre (Grafton, MA) pitched seven strong innings for Mass. Maritime in game two allowing only the two runs while striking out nine.

The Rams return to action on Saturday as they travel to WPI for a double header beginning at 2 p.m., while the Buccaneers host Bridgewater State on Tuesday at 2 p.m.
