Baseball Splits Two with Westfield State

Framingham, MA - The Framingham State College baseball team split a Massachusetts State College Athletics Conference (MASCAC) doubleheader at home today with Westfield State.  The Owls won the first game 5-1 and the Rams won the second 3-2 in thrilling fashion.

Sophomore pitcher Jesse Vermeersch (Marlboro, MA) picked up the win in game one for the Owls as he went the distance and faced one batter over the minimum.  Vermeersch went seven innings allowing one earned run on three hits while striking out seven.

The Owls (18-11-1, 8-4 MASCAC) took a 1-0 lead in the second inning as sophomore DH Kevin Lyons (Braintree, MA) hit a solo home run to right.  The Owls added single runs in the fifth sixth to extend their lead to 3-0.  The Rams opened their half of the sixth with back to back singles from juniors Billy Capen (Franklin, MA) and Matt Nicholson (Watertown, MA) and were able to push a single run across to cut the Owls lead to 3-1.  The Owls added two more runs in the top of the seventh to finish the scoring.

Freshman Kevin Loveless (Wakefield, MA) picked up the loss in game one allowing five runs (four earned) on seven hits in 6.2 innings.

Senior righty Evan Beauvais (West Boylston, MA) hurled a gem for the Rams (6-19, 3-9 MASCAC) in the night cap to pick up his second win of the season.  Beauvais went the distance allowing two earned runs on seven hits while striking out six.

The Rams took a 2-0 lead in the fourth inning of game two as freshman Steven Tramontozzi (Watertown, MA) connected for his first collegiate homerun as he launched a two run blast to left center field.  The Rams scored an insurance run in the bottom of the sixth on an RBI single by Capen (Franklin, MA).

The Owls rallied in the bottom of the seventh for two runs to cut the Rams lead to 3-2, but Beauvais was able to get Lyons to fly out to end the game.

Capen finished the day 4-for-5 with an RBI and a run scored for the Rams.

The Rams return to action on Thursday as they host Rhode Island College at 4 p.m.
