Baseball Rallies to Beat Clark

Worcester, MA - The Framingham State College baseball team erupted for five runs in the seventh inning to take an 11-7 come-from-behind victory over Clark University in non-conference play at Granger Field on Thursday.  Framingham improves to 3-7 overall, while Clark falls to 6-10.

Sophomore Ryan McCarthy (Shrewsbury, Mass.) went two-for-three with three RBI, while senior Michael Vona (Malden, Mass.) collected three hits and drove in two runs to lead Framingham.

Sophomores Ron Bathrick (North Haven, Conn.) and Stephen DeMartino (East Haven, Conn.) each had two hits and two RBI to pace Clark's attack.

Trailing 7-5, Framingham added a run in the top of the sixth to make it a one-run game. Vona led off with a double to centerfield, advanced to third on a wild pitch and came home on Stephen Marfione's (Medford, Mass.) knock to leftfield.

The Rams then took the lead with five runs in the seventh. McCarthy opened the inning with his second homerun of the day to knot the score (7-7), before Vona, Marc Massarotti (Watertown, Mass.) and Steven Tramontozzi (Watertown, Mass.) delivered RBI hits to account for the final score (11-7).

Framingham, which out-hit Clark 15-9, took an early 2-0 lead on McCarthy's two-run blast in the first.  However, the Cougars came back with four runs in the home half of the frame on a two-out run-producing double from Bathrick and DeMartino's two-run homer to left center for a 4-2 advantage. It was the sophomore outfielder's first career round-tripper.

Clark increased its lead (5-2) in the third on a Framingham error, but the Rams responded by plating three runs in the fourth to tie it up (5-5). Vona, Massarotti and Casey Hickey (Lee, Mass.) delivered RBI hits in the frame.

The Cougars took their last lead (7-5) of the day in the bottom of the fourth.  With two down and a runner at first base, Hollingsworth stroked an RBI triple - his team leading third of the season - and scored on Bathrick's single down the right field line.

Senior Angelo Guisado (Springfield, Mass.) (1-1) took the loss for Clark.  Freshman Kevin Loveless (Wakefield, Mass.) picked up the win in relief for the Rams, allowing just two hits in four innings on the hill.
