Velozo’s Career Night Leads Women’s Basketball Past Maine- Fort Kent

Framingham, Mass.- Framingham State senior Emily Velozo scored a career-high 33 points including 18 points in the first quarter to send the Rams over Maine- Fort Kent 89-67 in non-conference action Saturday evening in Framingham.

HOW IT HAPPENED:

  • After back-and-forth play for the first five minutes of the first the Rams took the lead for good around the 5:30 mark when junior Camille Desrochers sunk a trey to take a 15-14 advantage.
  • The Rams pushed their 1st quarter lead to 18 points (27-18) to end the period, largely thanks to 18 points from Velozo. The Bengals however stormed back in the 2nd when Ranika Guyton cut the Rams advantage to three midway through the period.
  • The Rams pushed their lead back to 12 capped via a Velozo layup near the end of the half as the teams went into the break with FSU up 50-40.
  • Framingham came out of the half on fire scoring the first 13 points of the frame and breaking off a 20-to-3 run over the first five plus minutes of the third on their way to putting the game away in the third quarter outscoring their opponent 27-9. 

INSIDE THE NUMBERS:

  • Velozo led all scorers with career-best 33 points going a perfect 12-for-12 from the line and adding a 5-for-7 mark from long range. Freshman Katty Haidul chipped in 15 points shooting 3-of-6 from beyond the arc and classmate Gwendolyn Carpenter added nine points for the hosts.
  • Ranika Guyton paced the Bengals with 21 points shooting 50% from the floor while Serena Smith and Keri La picked up nine points apiece.
  • The Rams shot 51.8% from the floor and 46.2% from beyond the arc. The visitors were only 37.3% from the field and 20% from long range.

UP NEXT:

The Rams return to action on Tuesday when they travel to Lasell University for a 6pm non-conference tilt. The Bengals will play Pine Manor tomorrow afternoon.
