Softball Collects 32 Hits in Sweep of Westfield State

Westfield, Mass.- The Framingham State softball team registered 32 hits in a double header sweep of Westfield State by scores of 7-2 and 16-7 in six innings.

- Records:  Framingham State (9-11, 4-0 MASCAC), Westfield State (4-16, 1-3 MASCAC)

Location: Owl Field – Westfield, Mass.

GAME 1:

In the opener, Framingham starter Kelsi Gunarathne (North Providence, RI) scattered seven hits through six innings while giving up just one unearned run, en route to a 7-2 Rams' win.

Framingham struck for three runs in the top of the third to break open a 1-1 game.  Laela Pepin (Acushnet, Mass.) doubled to lead off the inning, and Camille Desrochers (Westford, Mass.) drove in a pair of runs with a double later in the frame.

The Rams tacked on three more in the sixth on a double from Grace Caughey (Mendon, Mass.) and a two-run bloop single from Pepin.

Westfield scored single runs in the third and seventh inning. In the third, Colleen Hughes tied the game at 1-1 by driving in her sister Caitlin, who reached on an error to lead the inning.  The Owls tried to rally in the seventh with a two-out single from Sarah Meunier and an RBI double from Kaitlynn Prophet that cut the lead to 7-2 before the Rams recorded the final out.

Emily Arredondo (3-6) took the pitching loss for the Owls.

GAME 2:

In game two, Framingham struck for seven runs in the top of the first inning to put the Owls on their back foot all day. Mycala Moody (North Attleboro, Mass.) doubled in Desrochers who singled to start the game. Desrochers capped the first inning scoring with a two-run single knocking the Owls starter from the game.

Westfield battled to stay in the game, getting a three-run home run over the left field wall from Kayla Soucie in the third inning, and then the Owls hung three runs on the board in the third inning, as Caitlin Hughes led off with a home run to left center, and Sarah Muenier followed later in the inning with a two run double, which trimmed the Rams lead to 11-6.

Framingham added five more runs in the top of the sixth inning, with a two-run single from Farrah Adam and a two RBI double from Lauren Salisbury.

The Owls got one run back in the bottom of the sixth, as Meunier rapped her second double of the game, and pinch hitter Madison Philbrook blasted a double to right center to plate Meunier.

Reliever Marissa Velluci (3-0) picked up the pitching win for the Rams, while Brenna Welch took the loss for the Owls.
