Baseball Falls Short Against Benedictine 7-5

Kissimmee, Fla.  – The Framingham State University baseball opened their southern swing this morning and were defeated 7-5 by Benedictine at the RussMatt Central Florida Invitational.

THE BASICS:

HOW IT HAPPENED:

  • Benedictine plated six run in the top of the second inning to get on the board first.  Tyler Woynerows doubled to the right field gap plating the first run.  After a walk, the runner attempted to steal second and the throw sailed into the outfield allowing Woynerows to score.  An error on the Rams allowed the third run to score and RBI singles from Jack Feeley and Michael Chaffin accounted for two more runs.
  • Benedictine added a run in the top of the fifth on an RBI single by Woynerows pushing the lead to 7-0.
  • The Rams got on the board in the bottom of the fifth.  The Rams loaded the bases on a fielder's choice, a single off the bat of senior Aaron Williams (Brockton, Mass.) and a walk by classmate Kyle Lippert (Carlsbad, Calif.).  Junior Andrew Curtis (Dracut, Mass.) followed with a bases clearing triple to right cutting the gap to 7-3.
  • The Rams took advantage of a Benedictine error in the top of the eighth to score a run and cut the lead to 7-4.
  • Lippert tripled to right with one out in the ninth and came around to score on an RBI single to left by Curtis cutting the deficit to 7-5, but Benedictine was able to record the final two outs and secure the victory.
  • Senior Kevin Connelly (Bolton, Mass.) took the loss for the Rams going five innings and allowing seven runs four earned, on eight hits with three walks and three strikeouts.
  • Sophomore Michael Tucci (Danbury, Conn.) and senior Alex Erwin (Tewksbury, Mass.) combined to toss four innings of scoreless relief without allowing a hit.
  • Justin Sosa started for Benedictine and went four and two thirds allowing three earned runs on three hits with four walks and nine strikeouts.  Cameron Paladines earned the win going an inning and a third in relief and allowing no runs and no hits.
  • Curtis went two-for-five in the game for the Rams and drove in four runs, while Williams finished the game with a pair of hits. Lippert went one-for-two with two runs scored and three walks.
