Cross Country Has Strong Showing at Smith Invitational

Northampton, Mass. – The Framingham State University women's cross country team raced to an eighth place finish and the men's team placed fifth on Saturday afternoon at the 2015 Smith Co-Ed Cross Country Invitational, while Mount Holyoke finished as the top team on the women's side and Springfield on the men's.

The Rams were led by junior Courtney Torres (Westminster, Mass.) who finished in 58th with a time of 23:46 for the 5K course.  Sophomore Morgan Perry (Pepperell, Mass.) followed at 24:45 and freshman Iracely Sanchez (Framingham, Mass.) crossed the finish line at 25:14.

Rounding out the field for the women were junior Kayleigh Laughlin (Gardner, Mass.) (25:47), senior Seana Carrigan (North Dighton, Mass.) (29:54) and freshman Allie Flood (Dedham, Mass.) (31:11).

On the men's side junior Richie Wertz (South Easton, Mass.) and Dan Stevens (Holliston, Mass.) led the way with 21st and 22nd place finishes, respectively.  Wertz crossed the finish line in a time of 18:58 and Stevens was just under a second behind at 18:59.

Freshman Steven Furtney (Pembroke, Mass.) crossed the line next for the Rams at 21:07, while seniors Jay Ebersole (Natick, Mass.) and Thomas Rainsford (Holliston, Mass.) rounded out the Ram finishers at 24:46 and 28:04.

Both squads are back in action next Saturday at the UMass Dartmouth Invitational.
