Lancers Sweep Volleyball on Senior Day

Framingham, Mass.– The Worcester State University volleyball team defeated Framingham State 3-0 this afternoon in MASCAC action at the Athletic Center. Prior to the contest the Rams honored their three athletes playing in their final season: Brandee ThomasJamiyae Mattress & Morgan Failla 

THE BASICS:

- Records:Framingham State (14-15, 5-2 MASCAC), Worcester State (10-15, 7-0 MASCAC) 

- Location: Athletic & Recreation Center - Framingham, Mass. 

HOW IT HAPPENED: 

  • The Lancers secured the victory by scores of 27-25, 25-18 & 25-22.  

  • The Rams jumped out to an early first set lead but the Lancers answered leading 20-16. The Rams were able to tie the game at 20, the Lancers answered to make it 23-20 but the Rams would again tie the set at 24 all and 25 all before the Lancers would close out the first set victory 27-25.  

  • The visitors controlled the pace in the second leading by as much at 19-11. The Rams battled back to close the gap to 23-18 but a Sarah Ward service ace would end the set 25-18.  

  • The third set was as close as you can get with neither team leading by more than two points until the very end and saw multiple ties and lead change throughout. The Rams led 19-18 late in the set, the Lancers went on a three-point rally to take a 21-19 lead which they would extend to 23-20 before earning the 25-22 win to close the day.   

INSIDE THE NUMBERS: 

  • The Rams were led on the attack by Hailey Sanders who recorded kills on 2attempts with two errors for a .333 hitting percentage. Thomas added eight kills and a team best 1digsFailla recorded 20 set assists to go along with 11 digs. 

  • The Lancers were led by Natalie Gillis who had a game-high 18 kills on 32 attempts for a .531 hitting percentage while adding a team-best 15 digs. Leellee Tyler added 12 kills on 28 attempts with four digs. Angela Colonis registered eight kills adding 13 assists and 13 digs while Sarah Ward had a game-best 26 assists and chipped in five digs.  

UP NEXT: 

The Rams finish the MASCAC regular season with a 5-2 record and earn the #3 seed in next week's MASCAC Tournament. They will host a quarterfinal game on Tuesday evening. The Lancers finish the conference slate 7-0 earning the MASCAC Regular Season Title and #1 seed in the 2021 MASCAC Tournament.
