Volleyball Closes Regular Season with 3-2 Loss to Westfield State

Westfield, Mass. - The Framingham State University volleyball team was defeated 3-2 this afternoon by Westfield State University in Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference (MASCAC) action at the Woodward Center.

THE BASICS:

- Scores:   Westfield State 3, Framingham State 2 (16-25, 25-23, 19-25, 25-23, 15-10)

- Records: Framingham State (16-14, 4-3 MASCAC), Westfield State (5-18, 5-2 MASCAC)

Location:  Woodward Center – Westfield, Mass.  

INSIDE THE NUMBERS:

  • The Rams took the opening set 25-16 before Westfield narrowly took the second 25-23.  The Rams rebounded in the third frame taking it 25-19, before Westfield once again came back and took the fourth 25-23 setting up a decisive fifth set.
  • In the fifth, the game was tied 4-4 before the Owls rattled off three straight points including a pair of kills from Ashley Crowley to take a 7-4 lead.  The Owls pushed the lead to 10-5, but the Rams closed the game to 13-10 on a kill from freshman Brandee Thomas (North Kingstown, RI).  The Owls would close out the match with two straight points to seal the five set victory.
  • With the victory, the Owls secure the third seed in the upcoming MASCAC Tournament, while the Rams will be the fourth seed.
  • The Rams were paced by 13 kills apiece from Thomas and sophomore Brandey Rodriguez (Lawrence, Mass.).  Rodriguez also added four digs and three blocks.
  • Junior Deirdre Fay (Cornwall, NY) chipped in with 23 defensive digs and eight kills, while senior Mackenzie Whalen (Norton, Mass.) finished with 43 set assists and nine digs.
  • Freshman Alyssa Cafarelli (Peoria, AZ) added 25 digs, while sophomore Grace Caughey (Mendon, Mass.) added nine kills and 18 digs.
  • The Owls were led by 19 kills and nine digs from Brianna Starkey, while Crowley finished the match with 19 kills and nine digs with two blocks.
  • Jess Haradon paced the defensive effort for the Owls with a team-best 21 digs, while Ally Rega added 17 and 36 set assists.
  • Madison Coleman chipped in with 15 digs, while Ainsley MacLeod added seven kills and five digs.

UP NEXT:

Both teams will be back in action next week in the 2018 MASCAC Volleyball Championship Tournament and will host quarterfinal matches on Tuesday night.
