Women’s Volleyball Blanks Bridgewater State in MASCAC Action

Bridgewater, Mass. – The Framingham State University volleyball team defeated Bridgewater State University 3-0 tonight in Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference (MASCAC) action at the Tinsley Center.

With the win, the Rams improve to 7-14 on the year and are now 3-1 in the MASCAC, while the loss drops the Bears to 4-14 overall and 3-3 in the league.

The Rams took the match in straight sets by scores of 27-25, 25-22 and 25-17. The opening set was a back-and-forth affair. The Rams led 26-25 when Rodriguez won the set with a solo block. In the second set, the Bears rallied from a 22-16 deficit with five straight points to close the gap to one. Framingham, however, answered with three unanswered points to win the set (25-22) and take the 2-0 lead. The Rams scored nine of the final ten points to win the third set, 25-17, after score was knotted at 16-all.

The Rams were paced on the attack by the freshman duo of Brandey Rodriguez (Lawrence, Mass.) and Kelly Brinkman (Gardiner, NY).  Rodriguez led all players with a match-high 12 kills on 22 attempts with just three errors for a .409 hitting percentage. Rodriguez added three blocks in the triumph.  Brinkman added 10 kills and a block, while fellow freshman Michaela Cronin added eight kills and four digs.

The Rams defensive effort was led by a team-high 10 digs from senior Vicki Anderson (Attleboro, Mass.), while junior Mackenzie Whalen (Norton, Mass.) added 30 set assists and six digs.

Junior outside hitter Kayla Baril (Seekonk, Mass.) and freshman outside hitters Alexis Duarte(Fairhaven, Mass.) and Devan McNeill (Lakeville, Mass.) notched eight kills apiece for the Bears. Baril also tallied 12 digs. Freshman middle hitter Sydney Rice (Medway, Mass.) recorded four kills and five blocks (four solo), while junior setter Picabo Miskiv (Centerville, Mass.) notched 25 assists and BSU's lone ace of the match.

The Rams are back in action at home on Thursday night when they host Newbury College in non-conference action at 7 p.m.
