Volleyball Drops Conference Opener at Bridgewater State

Bridgewater, Mass. - Junior outside hitter Julie Clerc (Acushnet, MA) tallied a game-high 16 kills to lead Bridgewater State College to a 3-0 victory over Framingham State College in Massachusetts State College Athletic Conference (MASCAC) volleyball action this evening at the Tinsley Center in Bridgewater.

Bridgewater State improves to 3-9 on the season and 2-0 in the MASCAC standings.  The Bears have won 27 consecutive matches versus the Rams dating back to 1992.  Framingham dips to 7-10 overall and 0-1 in conference play.

The Bears edged the Rams, 25-20, in game one, followed by a 25-18 decision in game two.  Bridgewater closed out the match in game three by a score of 25-17.  

Junior setter Natalie Cohen (Marstons Mills, MA) led all players with 34 assists and added four digs for the Bears.  Sophomore hitters Shelly DePina (New Bedford, MA) and Ashley Gelinas (New Bedford, MA) notched nine kills apiece, while senior libero Brianne Cobb (New Bedford, MA) chipped in with 17 digs.  Junior Marissa Pita (Hyannis, MA) recorded a game-high four aces to go along with three digs.

Junior outside hitter Ashley Trudeau (Rockland, MA) led the way for Framingham State with 12 kills and 19 digs. Freshman setter Meaghan Callahan (Bridgewater, MA) added 21 assists, while junior outside hitter Lauren Kasischke (Methuen, MA) finished with eight kills.

Bridgewater State will compete in the Tufts Invitational on Friday and Saturday.  Framingham is off until next Wednesday when the Rams travel to Mass. Maritime Academy for a MASCAC match with Buccaneers at 6 p.m.
