Women’s Soccer Holds on for 3-2 Victory over Fitchburg State
Fitchburg, Mass – The Framingham State University women's soccer team tallied three first half goals and held off a late two-goal comeback by Fitchburg State University as the Rams secured a 3-2 victory in the Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference (MASCAC) opener for both squads.
Framingham State came out of the gates quickly, scoring three goals in the opening period to put an early stamp on the contest. It began eight minutes into play as freshman midfielder Jill Smith settled a feed from senior Meghan Kenny and deposited a shot just under the crossbar to make the score 1-0.
Less than five minutes later, freshman forward Jana Paecht corralled a loose ball in front of the net and proceeded to fire a shot inside the far post for her third score on the year to double the Rams lead (2-0).
The visitors upped its margin in the 20th minute of action as junior Haley McKay headed a shot into the back of the net off an assist from Smith as Framingham State took a 3-0 advantage into the locker room.
Following the break, the Falcons cut into the deficit at the 84:26 mark as freshman Micalea Goldenberg lofted a shot into the upper right corner of the net from 30 yards out off a direct kick for her first collegiate goal. Minutes later Goldenberg struck again off a free kick, blasting a shot inside in the far post to pull Fitchburg State within one (3-2).
But that's as close as the Green and Gold would get as the Rams defense buckled down to secure Framingham State's third win on the season.
Framingham State finished with a 21-13 advantage in shots, while also holding a 7-4 margin in corner kicks. In goal, freshman Alexandra Foster turned away seven shots in 90 minutes of action for the Falcons, while sophomore Keyonzia Gagne-Lamoureux made six saves in the complete game effort for the Rams.
Fitchburg State (2-4-0, 0-1-0 MASCAC) returns to the pitch on September 20th when it travels to Curry College to take on the Colonels for a contest starting at 6:30 p.m. The next action for Framingham State (3-2-0, 1-0-0 MASCAC) will be on September 21st when it clashes with Rhode Island College at 6:00 p.m.
