Big Second Half Leads WPI Over Women’s Soccer

Framingham, Mass.- The WPI women's soccer team scored six second half goals en route to a 7-1 victory over Framingham State on Tuesday evening at Maple Street Field. With the win the Engineers improve to 4-0 and the Rams slip to 2-1.

WPI senior Emily Doherty (Shrewsbury, Mass.) paced the Engineers attack scoring two goals and assisting on another. Sophomore Karina Larson (Storrs, CT) tallied a goal and two assists while senior Jaime Espinola (Greensboro, NC) scored once and added an assist. In addition, sophomore Cierra Ford (Georgia, VT) and juniors Emma Turton (Mechanic Falls, ME) & Lynn Renner (Aberdeen, SD) each tallied a goal each.

The Engineers opened up scoring just over four minutes into the contest when Doherty dribbled a loose ball around the Rams goalkeeper and into the net to take the early 1-0 advantage.

The Rams responded just over four minutes later when junior Michaela Hyland (East Longmeadow, Mass.) drove a free kick over the head of the leaping WPI keeper from 35 yards out to knot the game back at 1.

The contest would stay tied through halftime until Espinola's goal in the 47^th minute which gave the Engineers the lead and they never looked back.

WPI outshot the Rams 28 to 13 and attempted 6 corner kicks to the Rams 5.

Junior Abbey Teliska (LaGrangeville, NY) made two saves in 90 minutes for WPI. Sara Sullivan (Quincy, Mass.) made 11 saves in 75:40 for the Rams.

The Rams return to action on Saturday, September 12^th when they host Regis College at 7 p.m. WPI hosts Fitchburg State the same day at 1:00 p.m.
