Women’s Soccer Ends Season with 7-3 Loss to Westfield State

Framingham, Mass. – The Framingham State University women's soccer team closed the regular season this afternoon with a 7-3 loss to Westfield State in Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference (MASCAC) women's soccer action at Maple Street Field.

With the win, the Owls improve to 13-3-1 on the year and 5-2 in the MASCAC, while the loss eliminates the Rams from the MASCAC post season tournament as they fall to 8-8-1 overall and 3-3-1 in the conference.  The Owls must wait until the remainder of the MASCAC games are played tomorrow to find out what seed they will be in the tournament and who their opponent will be.

Westfield State took a 1-0 lead in the 12th minute of action on a Framingham State own goal.  The Owls extended their lead to 3-0 with a pair of goals later in the half.  In the 21st minute junior Leann Rivard (Chicopee, Mass.) sent a cross into the box that Kayley Miller (Ludlow, Mass.) headed home for her first of the game.  Ten minutes later, Rivard hit Brittanie McGregor (Ludlow, Mass.) with a pass and McGregor placed a shot in the bottom corner.

The Rams got on the board in the 35th minute when freshman Isabela DeSouza (Framingham, Mass.) was awarded a penalty kick after being taken down in the box.  DeSouza converted the penalty kick for her team-leading 13th goal of the season.

Less than a minute later the Owls answered as Rivard and Miller connected for the second time in the game pushing the lead back to three. The Rams added a goal in the 42nd minute when freshman Christina Buonopane (Stoneham, Mass.) sent a cross to classmate Melissa Higgins (Waltham, Mass.) and Higgins knocked it home sending the game to the half with the Rams tailing 4-2.

The Owls added three more in the second half from Sarah Sypek (Westhampton, Mass.), Ashleigh Chretien (North Attleboro, Mass.) and Miller, who completed the hat trick with her third of the game.  Sophomore Kayla Austin (Winchester, Mass.) scored for the Rams off a pass from senior Taylor Benton (Batavia, NY) in the 88th minute to reach the final margin of 7-3.

The Owls outshot the Rams 25-15 in the game and held an 8-4 edge in corner kicks.  Freshman McKenzie Vershon (Chicopee, Mass.) made six saves for the Rams and Jess Habif (Holliston, Mass.) made six saves for the Owls.
