Women's Soccer Shutout by Southern Maine

Falmouth, Maine - Junior forward Cathy Wise (Cape Elizabeth, Maine) scored two goals and assisted on a third as the University of Southern Maine women's soccer team posted its first win of the season by defeating Framingham State University, 3-0, Saturday afternoon in a non-conference match played at Falmouth High School.

The win improves the Huskies' overall record to 1-3-0, while the Rams drop their second straight decision to slip to 1-2-0.

Wise gave USM a 1-0 lead in the 14th when she took a pass along the left side, dribbled back across the top of the 18-yard box and beat FSU sophomore goalkeeper Ashley Hibbard (Marlboro, Mass.) with a right-footed shot.  Twenty-two minutes later, Wise slipped a pass between FSU defenders for junior midfielder Jess Gassman (Kennebunk, Maine) to run on to and finish with a 12-yard shot past Hibbard.

Framingham State had an edge in shots in the opening 45 minutes, out shooting Southern Maine 8-4.  USM senior keeper Kat Rothe (Leeds, Maine), who finished the game with six saves to collect her third career shutout, had four saves in the first half.

Wise had the only marker in the second half converting a pass from junior forward Katie Grenier (Oakland, Maine) in the 59th minute.

Hibbard finished the match stopping four shots.  Framingham State had a 14-10 advantage in shots and a 7-2 margin in corner kicks during the match.
