Women's Soccer Opens Season With an 8-0 Win

Framingham, Mass. - The Framingham State College women's soccer team opened up the 2009 season at home today on Maple Street Field with an 8-0 win over the Wheelock College Wildcats.  Junior midfielder Melissa Price (Norwood, MA) led the Rams offense with two goals and an assist on the day while freshman Megan Gangell (Lee, MA) added two tallies.

Framingham State freshman goalie Kia Minor (Oak Bluffs, MA) faced two shots on the day as she picked up her first collegiate shut out as she made one save en route to the win.

The Rams broke into the scoring column in the third minute of play as sophomore Laura Powers (Norwell, MA) took a pass from freshman Kim Clooney (Weymouth, MA) and fired a shot over the Wildcat goalie's head for the game winner.  Gangell would push the Rams lead to 2-0 in the 8th minute as she was taken down in the box and converted the penalty kick for her first collegiate goal.  Price added her first of the day in the 21st minute and freshman Kelly Olsen (Stoneham, MA) added her first goal of the season in the 31st minute to push the Rams lead to 4-0 at the half.

Wheelock College goalie Alexandra Chiesa (Medford, MA) faced forty-six shots on the day and made 22 saves as she picked up the loss in net.

Clooney, Price, freshman Laura Gray (Chicopee, MA), and Gangell all added single tallies in the second half to finish the scoring for the Rams.  Price assisted on Grey's first collegiate goal, while Clooney picked up her second assist of the day on Price's second marker.

The Rams return to action on Saturday as they travel to Nichols College at 3:30 p.m., while the Wildcats host Desales on Sunday at noon.
