Second Half Comeback Falls Short as Women's Lacrosse Opens Season with 15-10 Loss to Springfield

Framingham, Mass. – The Framingham State University women's lacrosse team opened the 2019 season this afternoon and were defeated 15-10 by Springfield College as the Rams second half comeback fell short in non-conference action at Maple Street Field.

HOW IT HAPPENED:

  • The Pride got on the board first just under three minutes into the game as sophomore Kate Sarnacki (Granby, Mass.) caused a turnover in the Rams defensive zone and converted the shot for the first goal of the game.
  • Springfield extended their lead to 4-0 with three goals over the next six minutes.  Sophomore Taylor Pichel (Hopkinton, Mass.) connected on her first of the game and senior Amanda Nusbaum (Conway, NH), who assisted on the tally, added a goal as well.
  • The Rams got on the board with just under 17 minutes remaining. Junior Grace Gamache (Dartmouth, Mass.) sent a pass from behind the net in front to sophomore Morgan Begley (Milton, Mass.) and Begley connected on her first of the season.
  • Springfield extended the lead to 6-1 after back-to-back goals, before sophomore Hanna McMahon (Watertown, Mass.) converted a free position shot for her first goal of the season cutting the deficit to 6-2.
  • Springfield closed the half with four straight goals including three from Sarnacki to take a 10-2 lead at the break.
  • Springfield's Meghan Lyndon tallied the first goal of the second half, but the Rams countered with two straight cutting the gap to 11-4.  McMahon struck first with an unassisted tally after making a nice move to get past a Pride defender and junior Nicole Pacheco (Woburn, Mass.) followed with a tally off a Gamache helper.
  • The Rams continued to chip away at the Pride advantage and pulled within five on a goal from Gamache off a Pacheco helper with just under 19 minutes to go.
  • The Pride pushed the lead back to six on a goal from Pichel before the Rams closed the gap to four, 14-10, on a goal from sophomore Alissa Marino (Trumbull, Conn.) off a McMahon helper with 6:29 on the clock.
  • That was as close as the Rams would get as the Pride added a final marker in the game's final minute to reach the final score.

 

INSIDE THE NUMBERS:

  • The Rams were paced offensively by four goals and a helper by McMahon in the game, while Gamache added a pair of marker and two assists.  Pacheco finished the game with a goal and an assist.
  • The Pride were led offensively by five goals and an assist from Pichel, while Sarnack finished the game with four markers and a helper.
  • Brenna Keefe picked up the victory in net making four saves, while senior Indigo Fox Tree-McGrath (Bedford, Mass.) suffered the loss despite making 13 stops.
  • The Pride held a 36-22 edge in shots for the game, while also collecting 30 ground balls to the Rams 21.

The Rams are back in action on Saturday when they host Wellesley College at noon, while the Pride host Eastern Connecticut on Thursday afternoon at 4 p.m.
