Women’s Lacrosse Opens Season with 17-13 Loss to Rivier
Framingham, Mass. – The Framingham State University women's lacrosse opened the 2013 season this afternoon at home with a 17-13 loss to Rivier University in non-conference action at Framingham's Maple Street Field.
With the win, the Raiders improve to 2-0 on the young season, while the Rams are now 0-1.
The Rams were led by senior Chelsea Temple (Rutland, VT) who tallied a team and game-best five goals including the 100th of her career. Junior Heather Masse (Billerica, Mass.) chipped in with four goals and an assist, while sophomore Zoe Reilly (Boyertown, PA) chipped in a game-high four helpers.
The Raiders were led by junior Rebecca Wickens (Tyngsboro, Mass.) who tallied five goals and an assist, while classmate Jessica Amaral (E. Providence, RI) contributed four goals and two assists. Freshman Elena Reilly (Braintree, Mass.) also had a solid game for the visitors with three goals and two helpers.
Framingham staked themselves the early 3-0 lead on Temple's 100th career goal and markers from Masse and junior Kerri Robinson (Mashpee, Mass.). Reilley got the Raiders on the board with just over 24 minutes remaining in the half, but Temple pushed the lead back to three with her second of the game.
Rivier rattled off six in a row to take a 7-4 lead with just under eight minutes remaining in the first, but the Rams counted with four straight to regain the lead (8-7). The Raiders closed the half with three goals in the final 2:14 to take the lead for good.
The Rams pulled within one (11-10) on Masse's third of the contest with just under 21 minutes left on the clock, but that was as close as they would get. Rivier rattled off three straight to push the lead back to four and after a Rams tally, scored three more to take the game's largest lead (17-11) with just under six minutes remaining.
The Rams added markers from Masse and Temple in the final five minutes to reach the final differential.
The Raiders held a 34-25 advantage in shots for the game. Freshman Alysha Cericola (Waltham, Mass.) made 11 saves in her first collegiate start for the Rams, while Danielle Moran (San Diego, CA) recorded the victory while making nine stops.
The Rams return to action next Saturday, March 23rd at Mount Ida College with a non-conference game slated to begin at 3 p.m., while the Raiders host Mount Ida this Saturday at 3:30 p.m. in the conference opener for both schools.
