Women's Lacrosse Halts Salem State's Comeback for 16-14 Victory

Salem, Mass. - Senior Kerry Kiley (Mansfield, Mass.) tallied five goals as the Framingham State University women's lacrosse team held off a comeback by the Salem State University Lady Viking's for a 16-14 victory this afternoon in a New England Women's Lacrosse Alliance matchup. 

The Rams improve to 7-6 on the season and 4-3 in the NEWLA, while the Vikings now stand with a record of 7-5 overall and 4-3 in the conference. 

Salem State jumped out to a quick 2-0 lead on two goals from senior Kaitlyn Shidler (Peabody, Mass.) in the opening two minutes of the game. 

However, Framingham would answer back with six unanswered goals.  Junior classmates Chelsea Temple (Rutland, VT) and Brittany McLean (Walpole, Mass.) had two goals apiece during that run. 

Salem State continued to pick away at the lead and would tie the score at six on a goal from sophomore Kelsey Russell (Arlington, Mass.). 

Framingham scored the next four goals in the half including a pair of free position shots to take a 10-6 lead at halftime. 

Salem State did not go away quietly as they would pull to within one goal twice in the second half.  The first coming on a goal from junior Bridget Dullea (Peabody, Mass.) to make the score 14-13 and the second with 11:45 remaining in the game on a goal from senior Kate Warren (Sandwich, Mass.). 

The Rams would not relinquish their lead and received three second half goals from Kiley, while McLean and Temple finished with three goals ap0iece.  Freshman goalie Ashley Holmes (East Sandwich, Mass.) picked up the win in net making five saves. 

Dullea led all Lady Vikings with six goals in the game. Shidler finished with three goals, while junior Kristen Cahoon (Reading, Mass.) had two goals and two assists.  Warren finished the game with one goal and three assists. 

Salem State outshot Framingham 34-26 and had a slim advantage on ground balls 18-17.  The visitors took control of 17 draws but were forced into 18 turnovers. 

Salem State returns to action as they host conference rival Bridgewater State on Wednesday afternoon at 3:30 pm.  The Rams will also return to action on Wednesday as they travel to Fitchburg State for a 7:00 pm conference game.
