Late Goal Lifts UMass Dartmouth to 19-18 Win over Women’s Lacrosse

Framingham, Mass. – Senior Leanne Canillas (New City, NY) tallied the game-winner for the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth women's lacrosse team on  a free position shot with 1:22 left in the game to lift the Corsairs to a 19-18 victory over Framingham State University in non-conference action this afternoon at Maple Street Field.

With the win, the Corsairs improve to 4-7 on the year, while the Rams slip to 4-5.

Senior Kerry Kiley (Mansfield, Mass.) tallied a game-best seven goals for the hosts, while junior Brittany McLean (Walpole, Mass.) and freshman Julie Mullen (Billerica, Mass.) each added two and an assist for three points apiece in the game.  Junior Heather Masse (Billerica, Mass.) chipped in three goals, while Chelsea Temple (Rutland, VT) and Lauren Kent (Framingham, Mass.) each tallied a pair of markers.

The Corsairs were led by Brittney Enos (East Falmouth, Mass.) and Canillas who tallied five and four goals respectively.  Freshman Shelby Friedland (New Bedford, Mass.) also scored four times, while Taylor Corsano (Bourne, Mass.) and Kathleen Landers (Danvers, Mass.) each tallied two goals.

In a tightly contested first half that saw four ties and several lead changes, the Rams took an 8-7 lead at the break after Temple converted a free position shot with a minute left in the stanza.

The second half mirrored the first with the two teams trading goals and the lead, but the Rams used a 3-0 run with Kiley scoring twice to take a 14-11 advantage with just under 19 minutes remaining in the game.  The lead would be the largest of the game for either team.

UMass Dartmouth responded with four unanswered goals over the next eight minutes with Corsano tallying a pair of goals to regain the lead, 15-14.

A Kiley free position shot once again tied the game, but Friedland scored off a Canillas assist to put the Corsairs back in front by one (16-15) with 8:15 remaining in the game.

Back-to-back goals by the Rams from Kiley and Masse put the hosts in front 17-16 with 6:38 on the clock, but Canillas would score three times in the next five minutes to put the Corsairs ahead for good.  Her first tally came off a Friedland assist to tie the game at 17-all with 5:24 remaining and her second tally off a Janelle Boyajian (Whitman, Mass.) assist at 3:58 put the Corsairs back in front.  She added an insurance goal and what also proved to be the game-winner with 1:22 left on a free  position shot after the Rams goalie had be carded.

Temple pulled the Rams back within one with her goal in the final minute, but the Rams were playing a player down as a result of the card and were unable to move the ball into the offensive zone in the final 30 seconds.

The Rams outshot the Corsairs 42-34 in the game, but UMass goalie Angelina Donovan (Medford, Mass.) made 17 saves to pick up the win.  Sophomore Rebecca Rixan (Stow, Mass.) picked up the loss in net for the Rams making five saves.

The Rams return to action on Thursday afternoon when they host Plymouth State at 4:30 p.m., while the Corsairs travel to Wheelock on Saturday at 11:30 a.m.
