Women’s Lacrosse Falls to MIT 17-7

Framingham, Mass. – Junior Katie Kauffmann (Olney, Md.) scored six goals to lead the MIT women's lacrosse team to a 17-7 win over the Framingham State Rams in a non-conference game this afternoon at Maple Street Field. With the win the Engineers improve to 6-3 on the season, while the Rams fall to 1-4.      

Kauffman led all scorers with six goals including the game winner late in the first half.  Freshman Kaitlyn Nealon (Yorktown Heights, N.Y.) added three goals and an assist, while Kelly Duncan (Rockville Centre, N.Y.) added a pair of goals and two helpers.  Senior Erica Little (Sherborn, Mass.) contributed a game-high three assists and a goal, while Molly McShane picked up two assists and a goal.

The Rams were led by junior attack Kerry Kiley (Mansfield, Mass.) who scored a team-high three goals, while sophomore Chelsea Temple (Rutland, Vt.) chipped in two and Louie Rijo (Salem, Mass.) and Heather Massee (Billerica, Mass.) add a single goal apiece.

Leading 2-1 with just over 23 minutes remaining in the first half, the Engineers scored six unanswered goals including three from Nealon and a pair from Kauffman to take a commanding 8-2 lead with 7:17 remaining in the half.

MIT would maintain the six goal advantage until the final minute of the half as Temple converted a free position shot with 47 seconds remaining and Kiley scored unassisted with 12 seconds left to pull the Rams within five at the break.

MIT extended the lead back to six in the opening minutes of the second half as Kauffman scored just 27 seconds in and Laura Wacker connected for her lone goal in the game with 26:54 left on the clock.

Massee scored unassisted to pull the Rams back within six (10-4), but the Engineers scored three unanswered, as Kauffman found the back of the net twice more and Little connected on her goal, to open up a commanding 13-4 lead with 21:20 remaining.

Temple scored for the Rams at 18:16, but MIT once again answered scoring three unanswered goals to open up an eleven goal lead and put the game away.

Sophomore Kelsey Turner (Billerica, Mass.) made 18 saves and picked up the loss in net for the Rams, while freshman Sarah Ritter made 12 saves and picked up the victory for the Engineers.

The Rams return to conference action on Thursday as they travel to Becker College 7 p.m., while the Engineers host the University of Southern Maine on Saturday at 4 p.m.
