Women's Basketball Hands Bridgewater State First Conference Loss

Framingham, Mass. - The Framingham State University women's basketball team used a layup from Flannery O'Connor and a pair of Gwendolyn Carpenter free throws in the final minute to hand Bridgewater State their first conference loss of the season 59-58 this evening in Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference (MASCAC) action at Logan Gymnasium.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS 

  • The Bears opened the game with a 7-2 run capped by a pair of free throws from Arielle Cleveland, but the Rams countered with a 14-4 run capped by a Kelsey Yelle bucket to take a 16-11 lead with just under three to play in the first. The two teams traded points to close the frame and the Rams led 18-17 after one. 

  • Both teams struggled from the floor in the second quarter with the Rams shooting just 21% from the floor in the frame, while Bears shot just 30%. Despite the lack of offense in the second quarter the Rams took a 26-25 lead into the locker room. 

  • A Sydney Bradbury three tied the game at 28-28 in the opening minute of the third, but the Rams rattled off a 10-0 run fueled by a pair of Chloe Rayko threes to take a 38-28 lead with 6:59 on the clock.  

  • The Bears closed the gap to six on a Sophia Gaucher layup with 5:55 left in the third, but the Rams tallied four straight including another Yelle bucket pushing the lead to 43-32.  

  • The Bears closed the third and opened the fourth quarter with a 14-1 run capped by a Kylie Grassi three point play to take a 46-44 lead with 8:53 to go in the fourth. 

  • A Rayko three gave the Rams a 48-46 lead, but the Bears scored five straight and led 53-48 midway through the fourth.  

  • The Rams countered with five straight of their own including an O'Connor layup tying the game, 53-53, with 3:14 on the clock. 

  • A Gaucher layup and Grassi free throw put the Bears back on top 56-53 with 2:14 on the clock, but a pair of Yelle free throws with 54 seconds left pulled the Rams within one, 56-55. 

  • After a pair of Bear misses from the free throw line, an O'Connor layup put the Rams on top 57-56 with 17.4 on the clock. After a miss, the Bears were forced to foul, and Carpenter sank a pair of free throws pushing the lead to 59-56 with 5.5 on the clock. 

  • The Bears called timeout to advance the ball. The Bears had a clean look at a three which missed, but Cleveland converted a put back with a second remaining to reach the final margin. 

  • Yelle finished the game with a double double for the Rams as she tallied 18 points and grabbed 12 boards. Carpenter finished the night with 12 points, six boards and four assists, while Rayko finished the game with 10 points. O'Connor finished the night with nine points and 13 rebounds. 

  • The Bears were led by 17 points and five rebounds from Grassi, while Bradbury finished the night with 13 points and two rebounds.
