Women’s Basketball Holds on for 64-61 Win Over Babson; Improve to 8-0

Framingham, Mass. – The Framingham State women's basketball team improved their season opening winning streak to eight after a 64-61 Win Over Babson College Tuesday evening in Framingham.  

THE BASICS: 

- Score:  Framingham State 64, Babson College 61 

- Records:  Framingham State (8-0), Babson College (4-5) 

- Location:  Logan Gym Framingham, Mass. 

HOW IT HAPPENED:  

  • Both teams struggled to score points in the opening frame as a last second layup by Kelsey Yelle gave the Rams a 13-10 lead.  

  • The Rams went on an 11-2 run through the first part of the second quarter, capped off by a Katherine Haselton layup with just over five to play. Babson battled tough through the second and hit a trey as time expired to cut the Rams margin to seven at the half.  

  • Babson caught their stride coming out of the half with quick points from Kelly Walsh, including her 1,000th career point. The Beavers would stay within a couple of possessions until a Walsh triple cut the Rams lead to one with just over five minutes to play in the fourth.  

  • After trading a few possessions and buckets, Katelyn Mollica drained a trey with 2:37 to play in regulation to knot the game at 53. 

  • Kelsey Yelle would convert a three-point play after a great pass from Flannery O'Connor on the other end to push the Rams lead back to three. 

  • After a Babson basket, O'Connor hit a big layup under the hoop after a floating lead pass from Gwendolyn Carpenter with just over 90 seconds to go.  

  • After a Rams foul and two Babson free throws, Yelle again answered the call with a jumper with 38 seconds left.  

  • Babson scored quickly on the other end and fouled, but Carpenter made all four of her free throws over the next two possessions to seal the victory.  

INSIDE THE NUMBERS: 

  • The Rams were once again paced by Yelle who scored 19 points with 11 boards, registering a double-double.  

  • O'Connor had 16 points with six boards two assists, a steal and a block. Chloe Rayko chipped in 13 points while Carpenter added seven points and 12 assists.  

  • Walsh led all scorers with 21 points while collecting six boards, five assists, three steals and three blocks. Mollica added 13 points with four boards, two assists and three steals.  

  • The Rams shot 42% from the floor and 29% from long range, while Babson was 40% from the field and 23% from downtown.  

UP NEXT: 

The Rams return to the court on Thursday when they host Rivier at 5:30. The Beavers are idle until December 29th when they host Susquehanna as part of the Judy Pearson '85 Memorial Tournament.
