Wesleyan Uses 17 Three-Pointers to Down Women’s Basketball; 74-67

Babson Park, Mass  The Wesleyan University women's basketball team scored 51 points from long range, shooting 50 percent (17-of-34) from beyond the arc, en route to a 74-67 victory over Framingham State on day one of the Judy Pearson '85 Memorial Women's Basketball Tournament hosted by Babson College. The loss snapped the Rams six game winning streak.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS: 

  • Wesleyan's Caleigh Ryan scored a team best 24 points on 8-of-16 and 5-of-8 from long range while adding eight rebounds and seven assists to pace the Cardinals. Maddie Clark added a double-double with 23 points and ten rebounds going a deadly 6-for-9 from beyond the arc.  

  • For the Rams, Flannery O'Connor set the tone with a game and season-high 26 points with 13 rebounds and three blocks. Classmate Gwendolyn Carpenter added 18 points going 9-for-10 from the line and adding five assists. 

  • The Cardinals shooting was the difference maker shooting 50% from beyond the arc and 81% from the line.  

  • The Rams shot 18% from long range and 77% from the charity stripe.  

HOW IT HAPPENED:  

  • The exciting back-and-forth contest saw eight ties and 15 lead changes before the Cardinals pulled away late.  

  • The Rams staked an early 6-5 advantage before the Cardinals spun off an 11-0 run capped by a Clark trey midway through the first. After a timeout, the Rams would chip away early in the second frame when a Carpenter trey gave them a 24-22 advantage and the two teams would head to the break with the Rams up 29-28.  

  • After a few ties and lead changes the Rams would take a 44-42 lead with just over two minutes to play in the third after a Camille Desrochers trey. The Cardinals would respond with a 13-2 run featuring three triples from Clark & Ryan to make it 55-46.  

  • The Rams would cut the deficit to five after a putback from Carpenter but Ryan again buried a trey on the other end to stop to momentum and send the Cardinals to victory.
