Women's Basketball Uses Strong Third Quarter to Surge Past MIT 68-52

Framingham, Mass.  The Framingham State University women's basketball team outscored the Engineers 18-9 in the third quarter to take control of the game as the Rams defeated MIT 68-52 this evening in non-conference action at the Athletic Center.  

THE BASICS:

INSIDE THE NUMBERS: 

  • Krysta Padellaro paced the Rams on the offensive end with a game-best 20 points on 9-of-15 from the floor to go along with four rebounds, an assist and two steals. 

  • Flannery O'Connor and Katty Haudul each tallied double doubles for the Rams. O'Connor tallied 17 points and grabbed 10 boards with two assists, a steal and four blocks, while Haidul scored 16 with 11 boards and four assists. 

  • The Engineers were led by a team-high 14 points from Christina Antonakakis, who added two assists and a steal. 

  • Annika Sougstad was the only other Engineer in double figures as she tallied 10 points on 5-of-7 from the floor and added eight boards. 

  • Sarah Berman chipped in with nine points and four rebounds off the bench for MIT. 

  • The Rams shot 4% from the floor in the game including 33% from behind the arc, while the Engineers connected on 36% of their shots and 28% from long range. 

HOW IT HAPPENED: 

  • In the first quarter, the two teams traded baskets until the Rams used a 6-0 run capped by a Camille Desrochers three to take a 14-8 lead with just under four remaining in the frame. 

  • MIT closed the quarter with a 7-2 run of their own capped by a Sougstad jumper to trail 16-15 after one. 

  • MIT opened the second quarter with back-to-back hoops to take a 19-16 lead with 7:28 on the clock. 

  • The Rams took the lead back, 20-19, on a Padellaro layup with 5:19 on the clock, but the Engineers used a 5-0 run capped by a three from Berman to take a five-point lead (25-20) with just over four remaining. 

  • The Rams closed the half with a 10-2 run and took a 30-27 lead into the locker room. 

  • In the third quarter, the Rams pushed the lead to eight on an O'Connor basket with just under seven on the clock, but MIT pulled within four, 40-36, on a Paula Pieper jumper with just over four on the clock. 

  • The Rams closed the quarter with an 8-0 spurt taking a 12 point lead into the fourth quarter. 

  • In the fourth quarter, the Rams continued to maintain the lead. MIT pulled within seven, 59-52, on a pair of Antonakakis free throws with just under three minutes remaining in the game, but the Rams closed the game scoring the final nine points including a pair of Haidul jumpers to secure the victory.
