Velozo and O'Day Combine for 46 as Women's Basketball Defeats Regis 82-53

Weston, Mass. – The Framingham State University women's basketball team received a combined 46 points from the duo of seniors Emily Velozo (Tewksbury, Mass.) and Mary Kate O'Day (Berlin, Mass.) as the Rams defeated Regis College 82-53 in non-conference action this evening at Higgins Court.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS:

  • Veloze paced the Rams on the offensive end connecting on 11-of-16 from the floor including 4-of-8 from behind the arc.  Velozo grabbed two boards and dished out two assists.
  • O'Day chipped in with a double-double effort of 17 points and a team-high 10 boards. O'Day connected on 5-of-13 from the floor and 7-of-8 from the line to go along with two assists and a steal.
  • Freshman Katty Haidul (Wakefield, Mass.) chipped in with nine point and three rebounds off the bench, while classmate Flannery O'Connor (Amesbury, Mass.) added eight points and five boards.
  • Regis was paced offensively by 20 points from Pam Gonzalez, while Katryna Veasey added 10 off the bench.
  • The Rams shot 55% from the floor in the game including 44% from behind the arc, while the Pride connected on 28% of their offerings and just 22% from behind the arc.

 

HOW IT HAPPENED:

  • With the Pride trailing 4-3 2:04 into the first quarter, Framingham State scored on three consecutive trips to increase their lead to seven.
  • The Rams extended the lead to 11 before Veasey sparked a pride run cutting the deficit to five.
  • The Rams held a 22-15 lead at the end of the first quarter after a pair of free throws from Mary Kate O'Day.
  • The Pride chipped away at the deficit at the start of the second quarter.  After Velozo hit a three-pointer, the Pride's Gonzalez got on the scoreboard with a layup, followed by a three-pointer, cutting the lead down to three.
  • With the score 27-25 in favor of the Rams, junior Camille Desrochers (Westford, Mass.) hit a three-pointer, sparking eight consecutive points for the Rams bringing the lead back to double digits. At the end of the first half the Rams held a 38-31 lead.
  • The Rams and Pride traded baskets at the start of the third quarter, until Velozo kicked off a 9-0 run bringing the Rams' lead to 15. Framingham State ended the quarter leading Regis 61-48.
  • In the final frame the Rams outscored the Pride 21-7 to close out the victory.
