Women's Basketball Opens Season with 91-41 Victory over Curry

Framingham, Mass. – The Framingham State University women's basketball team opened the 2019 season with a convincing 91-41 victory over Curry College in non-conference action at the Athletic Center.

THE BASICS:

INSIDE THE NUMBERS:

  • Senior Mary Kate O'Day (Berlin, Mass.) led the way for the Rams with a game-best 24 points on 9-of-16 from the floor including five-of-eight from behind the arc. O'Day added seven rebounds and three assists.
  • Freshman Flannery O'Connor (Amesbury, Mass.) recorded a double double of 17 points and 10 rebounds with three blocks in her first collegiate action.
  • Junior Camille Desrochers (Westford, Mass.) and senior Mallory DeFeo (Arlington, Mass.) finished with nine points apiece, while senior Emily Velozo (Tewksbury, Mass.) and freshman Katty Haidul (Wakefield, Mass.) finished with eight apiece.
  • The Colonels were led by 13 points and four steals from freshman Katie Smith (East Bridgewater, Mass.), while freshman Kathryn Dunn (Hanson, Mass.) finished with a double double of 10 points and 11 rebounds including six offensive boards.
  • The Rams shot 55% from the floor in the game including 50% from behind the arc, while the Colonels connected on 26% of their offerings from the floor and behind the arc. 

 

HOW IT HAPPENED:

  • The first quarter was tightly contested with neither team leading by more than a couple. Tied at 15-15, the Rams closed the frame with a 4-0 run taking a 19-15 lead after one.
  • The Rams outscored the Colonels 30-11 in the second quarter taking a 49-26 lead at the half.  The second quarter featured a 13-0 run from the Rams over a three minute span that was fueled by a three from O'Day and a three-point play from Velozo and capped by layups from Haidul and O'Connor.
  • O'Day tallied 18 points including five-of-eight from behind the arc in the first half, while O'Connor finished the frame with 12 points.  Curry was led by 11 first half points from Katie Smith.
  • The Rams opened the third quarter with an 11-0 run extending the lead to 60-26 and outscored the Colonels 30-6 in the frame. The Rams shot 70% from the floor in the third to just 14% for Curry.

The Rams are back in action on Friday night when they face Eastern Nazarene at the Brandeis Tip-Off Tournament, while Curry is back in action this weekend at the St. Joseph's Tournament.
