HOW IT HAPPENED:

  • Both teams started the game slowly with Worcester State leading 6-0 midway through the frame. A three from O'Day cut the deficit to 4-3.
  • The two teams would combine for 16 turnovers in the first quarter and the Lancers would lead 11-9 after one.
  • In the second quarter, the Lancers started the frame with a 5-0 run and led 16-9 after a layup from senior Kaitlyn Berkel (Waterford, Conn.) with 7:13 on the clock.
  • The Rams answered with a 10-2 run fueled by a pair of threes from sophomore Camille Desrochers (Westford, Mass.) to take a 19-18 lead.
  • The two teams would trade baskets and the lead over the final three minutes of the second.  O'Day put the Rams on top 25-22 with a nifty drive and bucket in the paint, but senior Kate Suprenant (Pelham, NH) hit a three at the buzzer sending the game to the locker room tied at 25-25.
  • Worcester State opened up a 38-31 lead midway through the third quarter after a layup from senior Emily Carens (Northboro, Mass.).
  • The Rams closed the quarter with a 8-2 run capped by a layup from junior Julia Sanborn (Dracut, Mass.) to head to the fourth trailing 40-39.
  • The Rams took the lead 41-40 on a pair of O'Day free throws before the clock even started for the fourth after a technical was called on the Worcester bench.
  • Worcester scored six quick points to take a 46-41 lead on a layup from senior Brittany Herring (West Brookfield, Mass.) with 8:43 on the clock.
  • On the next possession, O'Day was fouled and sank the first free throw for her 1000 point and then sank the second to pull the Rams within three.
  • The Rams tied the game, 46-46, on a three from Desrochers with 7:46 on the clock.
  • The two teams would trade baskets over the next five minutes until a layup from Catherine Sweeney (Lowell, Mass.) with two minutes on the clock put the Lancers on top for good. Another Sweeney layup pushed the lead to 56-52 with 1:17 left.
  • O'Day was fouled on the Rams next possession, making one of two to cut the deficit to 56-53.
  • Worcester State turned the ball over with 45.9 on the clock and the Rams called timeout.  After the timeout, senior Tiphani Harris (Revere, Mass.) was fouled and hit both pulling the Rams within one with 32.2 on the clock.
  • Worcester missed a shot on the next possession and Harris secured the rebounds for the Rams. After a block on their first attempt, the Rams called timeout, but turned the ball over with six seconds on the clock.  The Rams fouled, but had only two team fouls so the Lancers were able to inbound and run out the clock.
