Women’s Basketball Soars to 88-49 Win Over Fitchburg

Fitchburg, Mass. – The Framingham State University women's basketball team defeated Fitchburg State by a score of 88-49 in Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference (MASCAC) action Saturday afternoon to open conference play. With the win the Rams improve to 7-6 and 1-0 in the MASCAC. The Falcons are now 4-8 and 0-1 in league play.

The Rams were led by sophomore Mary Kate O'Day (Berlin, Mass.) who finished with game-leading 23 points and six caroms, while junior Tiphani Harris (Revere, Mass.) chipped in with double-double of 15 points and 16 rebounds.

The Falcons were paced by Angelina Marazzi (Manchester, NH) with a team-best 16 points and four boards, while sophomore Catherine Coppinger (Dorchester, Mass.) added seven points and three rebounds. 

Framingham State raced out to an early 13-4 lead in the first quarter after a 9-2 run on a three pointer and jumper by O'Day as well as buckets from Harris and sophomore Julia Sanborn (Dracut, Mass.).

In the second frame, the Rams extended its margin (38-19) late in the quarter after a jumper by sophomore Emily Velozo (Tewksbury, Mass.). Fitchburg State closed out the quarter on a 5-0 stretch as newcomer Mishelle Logie (Attleboro, Mass.) drained a three pointer and a layup to make the score 38-24 going into the break.

Following the intermission, Framingham State upped its advantage (65-35), going on a 7-2 run, keyed by a trey from O'Day. In the fourth quarter the Rams continued to build on its lead as Velozo knocked down a jumper to make the score 76-41. Fitchburg State answered back on a layup from freshman Chloe Roberts (Hanson, Mass.) (80-48), but Framingham State capped the scoring on a trey by newcomer Camille Desrochers (Westford, Mass.), resulting in the 88-49 final.

Fitchburg State shot 18-of-60 (30.0%) from the field and 19.4% (6-for-31) from three point range. Framingham State went 33-of-71 (46.5%) overall, including (8-for-18) 44.4% from beyond the arc.

The Falcons will travel to Anna Maria on Monday to take on the AMCATS for a non-conference matchup starting at 5:00 P.M. Rams will host the Lancers of Worcester State on Wednesday for a MASCAC bout with a  6:00 P.M. tipoff.
