MIT Long-Range Shooting Too Much For Women’s Basketball
Cambridge, Mass.. – A 7-of-10 performance from three-point range during the first quarter helped propel the MIT women's basketball team to a 78-49 victory over Framingham State University on Tuesday night. Junior Kara Holinski (Livonia, Mich.) led all players with 24 points to go along with four assists and two steals for the Engineers. Mary Kate O'Day (Berlin, Mass.) paced the Rams' balanced attack with 10 points while grabbing four rebounds.
With the win the Engineers improve to 5-2 while the Rams slip to 4-5.
MIT raced out to a 25-4 advantage by knocking down seven of its first eight attempts from behind the arc. A trey by O'Day ended Framingham State's two-minute scoring drought with 3:28 on the clock, but a layup by junior Taylor V'Dovec (Blaine, Wash.) sparked a 7-2 spurt for the Engineers. On the Rams' final possession of the quarter, O'Day drained a layup right before time expired to make the score 32-11.
The hosts continued to cruise in the second stanza as they outscored Framingham State, 25-15, entering halftime with a 57-26 lead.
The Rams' offense found its rhythm in the third quarter as a three-pointer by Lauren Donahue (Attleboro, Mass.) at the 6:54 mark ignited a 15-4 run that was capped by Abbey Battaini's (Haverhill, Mass.) trifecta with just under a minute to go. The 66-42 margin was as close as it would get for the visitors as MIT outscored Framingham State, 12-7, in the final frame.
Junior Dolly Yuan (San Jose, Calif.) tallied 19 points and six assists while classmate Kristen Ngan (Sudbury, Mass.) generated 11 points, four assists, and three steals. Freshman Kylie Gallagher (Upton, Mass.) totaled 11 points and seven rebounds as V'Dovec registered nine points, six rebounds, four assists, and two steals. Junior Maude Gull (Zurich, Switzerland) bolstered the Engineers' defense with six rebounds.
Tiphani Harris (Revere, Mass.) almost recorded a double-double for the Rams as she finished with a game-high 12 rebounds to go along with seven points. Bryanna Santos (Brockton, Mass.) chipped in nine points coming off the bench while Raegan Mulherin (Baldwinville, Mass.) dished out three assists.
MIT shot 50 percent from the floor and three-point range while the Rams were 30.2 percent and 29.4 percent, respectively. The Engineers had the upper hand in rebounds (40-38) and points off turnovers (25-8) while Framingham State ended the night with advantages in points in the paint (28-24), second-chance scoring (15-4), and bench scoring (21-4).
The Cardinal and Gray buried 12 three-pointers, one shy of tying the Institute record for three-point field goals in a game. Individually, Holinski was also one trifecta away from tying the program record as she hit six shots from behind the arc.
Both squads are back in action on Thursday, Dec. 14. MIT will visit Endicott College for a 7:00 p.m. start while Framingham State will travel to Regis College for a 6:00 p.m. tip off.
