Women’s Basketball Suffers Setback at UMass- Dartmouth

Dartmouth, Mass. – Sophomore Bri Hochwarter (Attleboro, Mass.) and junior Colleen Kane (Arlington, Mass.) combined for 11 three-pointers to power the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth to an 86-47 victory over Framingham State University this evening in a NCAA Division III women's basketball contest inside the Tripp Athletic Center.

The Corsairs captured their third consecutive victory to improve to 12-4, while halting the Rams two-game winning streak and lowered their record to 11-5.

UMass Dartmouth knocked down 46.2 percent (12-for-26) of its attempts from behind the three-point arc, led by Hochwarter's six triples. Kane produced a season-high 15 points, on 5-for-7 from downtown.  Sophomore Megan Ronaghan (North Attleboro, Mass.) registered a game-high 21 points, on 9-for-15 shooting, and seven rebounds. Alicia Kutil (Franklin, Mass.) added 12 points and a game-high eight boards. Senior Erin Fahey (Salem, Mass.) filled out the box score with eight points, five rebounds, and a game-best five assists.

The Corsair defense limited Framingham State to just 33.3 percent (16-for-48) from the field, while forcing a season-best 33 turnovers.  The hosts were able to record 24 off the visitors' miscues.

Sophomore Sarah Palace (Auburn, Mass.) scored 12 of her team-high 14 points in the first half, while senior Johanna Annunziata (Auburn, Mass.) chipped in with seven points and a team-high four assists.     

Both teams were accurate from long distance in the opening minutes of the contest, with six consecutive possessions ending in a made three-pointer over the span of just 84 seconds.  Kane capped the flurry with back-to-back triples to give UMass Dartmouth a 13-9 lead.

The Rams responded with the next four points, but the Corsairs exploded for a 9-0 run to regain their advantage.  Kane ignited the surge with a three-pointer, while Ronaghan bookended baskets around a senior Kelsey Garrity (Somerville, Mass.) jumper to push the lead to 22-13.    

Hochwarter drained a three-pointer to give the hosts their first double digit lead (25-15) of the contest with 9:38 remaining in the half.  UMass Dartmouth outscored Framingham State 21-12 over the final nine minutes, punctuated by a three-point Hochwarter buzzer beater, to take a 46-27 lead into the intermission.

The Corsairs came storming out of the locker room to balloon their advantage to 35 points with a decisive 23-7 run.  Ronaghan fueled the surge with nine points, while Kane sank of pair of triples.

UMass Dartmouth never let its lead dip below 32 points for the remainder of the stanza to cruise to the non-conference victory.

The Corsairs also won the battle on the glass (45-35), including 19 offensive boards. 

UMass Dartmouth will return to action at 1 p.m. on Saturday, Jan. 24, when the Corsairs host Little East Conference foe Plymouth State University. The Rams will travel to Worcester State for MASCAC action on Tuesday, January 27th.
