Women’s Basketball Cruises to 80-42 Victory over Becker
Framingham, Mass. – Sophomore guard Kristen Hoffman (Foxboro, Mass.) led a balanced Rams attack as the Framingham State University women's basketball team defeated Becker College 80-42 this evening in non-conference women's basketball action at Framingham's Athletic Center.
With the win, the Rams improve to 11-7 on the year, while the loss drops the Hawks to 4-13.
Hoffman led the Rams with a team-best 16 points on 6-of-6 shooting from the floor and 2-of-2 from beyond the arc to go along with three assists and five steals. Junior Madeleine Park (Blue Hill, ME) and senior Emily Clark (Melrose, Mass.) were the only other Rams to record double figures with 11 and 10 points respectively. Freshman Margo McCarthy (Southampton, Mass.) chipped in nine points off the bench and classmate Nicole Bostic (North Easton, Mass.) added seven. Park, freshman Samantha Irvine (Franklin, Mass.), McCarthy, senior Jill Johnson (Mansfield, Mass.), junior Michelle Hagerty (Somerville, Mass.) and sophomore Kay Smith (Boston, Mass.) all shared team-high rebounding honors with five boards apiece.
The Hawks were paced by sophomore guard Chelsea Joubert (Westborough, Mass.) who tallied a game-high 18 points to go along with four assists and a pair of steals. Classmate Tatiana Mojica (Worcester, Mass.) contributed seven points, six boards and two steals, while Jacqueline Chila (Monroe, Conn.) added six points and a game-best eight rebounds.
Framingham State jumped out to a quick 7-0 lead just under two minutes into the game with five points coming from Hoffman including a three from long range. The Rams extended the lead to 23-8 with 14:02 left in the first before a 6-2 spurt by the Hawks cut the lead back to 11 (25-14). Sophomore guard Chelsea Joubert (Westborough, MA) tallied five of the Hawks six points on the stretch including a steal and pull up three from the left wing.
A 9-2 run by the Rams capped by back-to-back trifectas from freshman Katelyn Iafolla (Franklin, Mass.) and Hoffman pushed the Rams lead to 18 (34-16) with 6:32 remaining in the first. The Rams extended the lead late in the half before taking a 45-21 lead into the locker room.
The Rams shot 60% from three point range in the first half (6-10) and 53% (19-36) from the field, while the Hawks struggled from the floor shooting just 32% in the opening stanza and just 1-of-6 from long range.
The Rams maintained the large lead in the second half despite cooling off from the floor and were able to secure their 11th victory of the season. The Rams out-rebounded the Hawks 48-38 in the game and held a 42-18 advantage in points in the paint. Framingham State converted 26 Hawk turnovers into 27 points, while Becker converted the Rams 17 turnovers into just five points.
The Rams return to action on Saturday at MASCAC rival Worcester State at 3:30 p.m., while the Hawks host Regis on Saturday at 1 p.m.
