Westfield State Defeats Women’s Basketball 54-34

Framingham, Mass. – Senior forward Ashley Finnegan (Worcester, Mass.) notched a double double with game-highs of 14 points and 13 rebounds as the Westfield State Owls defeated the host Framingham State Rams 54-34 in Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference (MASCAC) women's basketball action this evening. 

With the victory, the Owls improve to 18-5 on the year and remain atop the MASCAC standings at 9-1 in conference, while the loss drops the Rams to 11-13 overall and 3-8 in the MASCAC.

Finnegan connected on 6-of-10 from the floor en route to her 14, while sophomore Jenny Bell (Northampton, Mass.) was the only other player to record double figures in the game with 13 points and five steals.  Sophomore Courtney DelRatez (Adams, Mass.) chipped in nine points on a trio of three pointers.

The Rams were led by freshman Kristen Hoffman (Foxboro, Mass.) who struggled from the floor but picked up seven points, while sophomores Kia Minor (Edgartown, Mass.) and Patrecia Bradshaw (Cambridge, Mass.) chipped in six points apiece.  Junior Emily Clark (Melrose, Mass.) also picked up six points, five boards and two steals, while Michelle Hagerty (Somerville, Mass.) grabbed a team-high ten boards.

With the Rams leading 9-8 with 11:10 remaining in the first half, the Owls closed the frame on a 20-6 run to take a 28-15 lead into the locker room.  Finnegan led Westfield with eight first half points and nine boards as the Owls outscored the Rams 16-4 in the paint in the frame.  Framingham State struggled from the floor in the first twenty minutes shooting just 26% (7-27) to 42% (11-26) for the Owls.

In the second half, the Rams continued to struggle from the floor and the Owls capitalized extending the lead to as many as 21 before reaching the final margin of 54-34.

The Rams outrebounded the Owls 40-38 in the game including holding an 18-9 advantage on the offensive glass, but the Owls held the advantage in the paint (34-16) and on points off turnovers (22-8).

Both teams return to MASCAC action on Thursday night as the Rams conclude the regular season hosting Salem State at 7 p.m., while the Owls travel to Worcester State at 6 p.m.
