Women’s Basketball Shoots Past Fitchburg State 78-66

Framingham, Mass. – Behind a career-high 21 points from sophomore forward Kia Minor (Edgartown, Mass.) and 18 from freshman guard Kristen Hoffman (Foxboro, Mass.) the Framingham State University women's basketball team picked up a 78-66 win over Fitchburg State in Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference (MASCAC) women's basketball action this afternoon in Framingham.           

The Rams snap a three game losing streak and avenge a 67-58 loss earlier this season at the hand of the Falcons.  Framingham State improves to 10-9 on the season and 2-4 in conference, while the Falcons slip to 8-9 on the year and an identical 2-4 in the MASCAC.

With the game tied at 5-5, the Rams started connecting from behind the arc and used an 18-7 to take a 23-12 lead with 11:22 on the clock.  Freshman guard Cassie Liston (Stoneham, Mass.) connected on 3-of-3 from behind the arc on the run, while classmate Kristen Hoffman (Foxboro, Mass.) also knocked down a trifecta.  The Rams continued their hot shooting extending their lead to 15 as they took a 44-29 lead into the locker room.

Both teams were firing from all cylinders from behind the arc in the first half as the Rams shot 73% (8-11) and the Falcons connected on 50% of their offerings from long range.  Hoffman led the Rams with 12 first half points including 4-of-5 from three, while Liston hit 3-of-4 from down town in the opening stanza.  Senior Kim Duprey (Bernardston, Mass.) went 4-of-6 behind the arc for 12 first half points for the Falcons.

The Rams extended their lead to as many as 17 midway through the second half, before the Falcons used an 8-0 run highlighted by a three from Durprey to pull within nine at 60-51 with 7:32 left in the contest.  Framingham State regrouped and pushed the lead back to 15 and did not let the Falcons get closer than 10 the rest of the way.

Minor led four Rams in double figures with her 21 in the game on 9-of-13 shooting from the floor to go along with a game-high eight boards.  Hoffman finished the game with 18 including 4-of-7 from behind the arc, while Liston and forward Emily Clark (Melrose, Mass.) each contributed 11. 

The Falcons were led by Duprey who finished with a team-high 18 points on 6-of-12 from behind the arc, while forward Melissa Proffitt (Hubbardston, Mass.) added 16 and six boards.  Amy Fahey (Wilmington, Mass.) chipped 11 points and Rebecca Goreham (Quincy, Mass.) grabbed a team-high seven boards.

The Rams shot 50% from the floor for the game (28-56) and 47% from behind the arc, while the Falcons shot 39% from the floor and only 32% from three.  Fitchburg State held a 39-32 advantage on the glass including a 15-8 edge on the offensive glass.

The Rams return to action on Tuesday as they travel to Bridgewater State at 5:30 p.m., and the Falcons host Worcester State on Thursday also at 5:30 p.m.
