Women’s Basketball Picks Up First Win of the Season 64-51 over Coast Guard

Framingham, Mass - Freshman forward Amy Connolly (Milton, Mass.) had her first career double double of 15 points and 11 rebounds and Framingham State used a 13-2 run late in the first half to take control of the game and beat Coast Guard 64-51 in a non-conference game which was the home opener for the Rams.

The game was tied for the eighth time at 18-18 with 5:54 left in the first half when the Rams used the 13-2 spurt fueled by back-to-back steals and lay ups from sophomore forward Kia Minor (Edgartown, Mass.) to take a 31-20 lead with 1:38 left in the first half. Framingham took a 31-24 lead into halftime.

The Rams shot 51.9 percent from the field in the opening stanza (14-27), while the Bears shot only 35% in the half.

Coast Guard (1-1) did not get any closer in the second half and Framingham started a 9-2 run with just over eight minutes left to put the game away turning a 47-38 lead into a 56-40 advantage.

Junior forward Emily Clark (Melrose, Mass.) shot 7 of 12 from the floor for 14 points and seven rebounds for the Rams, while Minor finished with a double-double of ten points and ten rebounds. Seniors Jill Johnson (Mansfield, Mass.) and Nicole McConaghy (Medford, Mass.) chipped in nine and eight points respectively.

Freshman Kaitlin Ward led the Bears with a career-high 19 points to go with six rebounds while classmate Larla Brown added ten points in the loss. Sophomore Karli Collins had eight points, seven rebounds and a team-high four assist for the Bears, who shot just 32.8 percent from the field (20-61) and made just 1 of 7 from 3-point range.

Framingham State outrebounded the Bears 47-31.

The Rams return to action on Tuesday, November 23rd at Anna Maria College at 7 p.m., while the Bears travel to Johnson & Wales on Saturday at 1 p.m.
