Softball Defeats Smith and Brockport – Miller Sets New Softball Career Coaching Win Mark

Clermont, Fla. - The Framingham State University softball team defeated Smith College 7-2 and Brockport 17-4 in non-conference action at the Spring Games this morning.  With the victory over Smith, FSU Head Coach Larry Miller tied the FSU Softball Coaching mark with his 194th victory with the Rams softball program and with the victory over Brockport, Coach Miller established a new FSU career record with his 195th victory with the program.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS: 

Game 1: Framingham State 7, Smith 2 

  • After falling behind 1-0 in the first inning, the Rams plated three in the bottom of the second taking the lead for good. Marina Cadena plated a run with a single up the middle and Gwendolyn Carpenter added a two run homer to center field. 

  • The Rams extended the lead to 4-1 on a Cadena solo home run in the bottom of the fourth. 

  • Carpenter added her second homer of the game – this one a three run shot – in the bottom of the sixth to account for the Rams final three runs of the game. 

  • Smith was able to push one more run across in the top of the seventh to reach the final margin. 

  • Caroline Hughes earned the victory in net for the Rams going seven innings, allowing two uearned runs, on five hits with three strikeouts. 

  • Carpenter finished the game 3-for-4 with two home runs, two runs scored and five RBI, while Cadena finished the game 3-for-3 with a home run, three runs scored and two RBI. Kelsey McGuill went 2-for-3 with a pair of doubles and a run scored. 

 

Game 2: Framingham State 17, Brockport 4 

  • The Rams grabbed a 2-0 lead after an RBI fielder's choice from Shelby Roode who then came around to score on a wild pitch in the top of the second. 

  • Brockport tied the game with single runs in the bottom of the second and fourth. 

  • The Rams received a two-run homer from Marina Cadena in the top of the fifth to push the lead to 4-2, but Brockport closed the gap back to one in the bottom of the inning. 

  • The Rams offense erupted for 13 runs in the sixth and seventh innings opening a large lead. Cadena added her second homer of the game, this one a three-run shot, while Eliza Carrigan added a solo homer. Kelsey McGuill drove in a pair of runs, one in each inning. 

  • Ally Moran earned the victory in the circle going seven innings, allowing four earned runs, on eight hits with five strikeouts. 

  • Cadena finished the game 3-for-4 with two homeruns, five RBI and three runs scored, while McGuill finished the game 2-for-2 with two RBI and two walks. 

  • Brooke Grassia added three hits, two runs scored and an RBI, while Carrigan finished 2-for-4 with a homerun, two runs scored and three RBI.
