Softball Clinches MASCAC Regular Season Title with Sweep of Westfield State

Westfield, Mass. - The Framingham State University softball team secured the 2023 Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference (MASCAC) Regular Season Title and the number one seed in the upcoming MASCAC Tournament with a pair of victories over Westfield State this afternoon in a doubleheader at the WSU Softball Field.     

THE BASICS: 

-Scores:  Framingham State 5, Westfield State 0 
Framingham State 6, Westfield State 5 

-Records: Framingham State (28-10, 12-0 MASCAC), Westfield State (22-12, 9-3 MASCAC)  

- Location: WSU Softball Field Westfield, Mass.   

Game 1 

  • In the opener, the Rams grabbed a 2-0 lead in the top of the first on a two-run single from Talia Duca. 

  • The Rams added a run in the top of the second as the Rams took advantage of an Owl miscue in the outfield. 

  • The Rams pushed the lead to 4-0 in the fifth when Makayla Rooney reached on an error allowing an unearned run to score. 

  • Gwendolyn Carpenter added an RBI single in the top of the fifth to reach the final margin. 

  • Ally Moran earned the victory in the circle for the Rams going seven shutout innings, allowing just three hits with two strikeouts and no walks. 

  • Duca finished the game 3-for-4 with two RBI, while Carpenter and Camille Desrochers picked up two hits apiece. 

 

Game 2: 

  • In game two, the Rams once again took the lead with a pair of runs in the top of the second inning. Brooke Grassia was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded to score the first and Rooney worked a walk with them loaded for the second. 

  • Westfield State tied the game with a pair of runs in the bottom of the third inning. 

  • The Rams retook the lead, 4-2, on a two run homerun from Carpenter. The homerun is the sixth of the season for Carpenter which sets the new FSU softball single season homerun record. 

  • Westfield State took their first lead of the day, 5-4, after scoring three in the bottom of the fifth. 

  • The Rams received a solo homer from Zoe Smyth in the top of the sixth that tied the game at 5-5. 

  • In the top of the seventh, Duca delivered an RBI single for what proved to be the game winning run after Moran worked a scoreless seventh in the circle. 

  • Olyvia Mendonca started in the circle for the Rams and went four and a third allowing five earned runs on nine hits with four strikeouts. 

  • Moran came on in relief to earn the victory, her 18thof the season which establishes a new school record for victories in a season. Moran went two and two thirds, allowing no runs on no hits with a strikeout.

The Rams are back in action on Saturday when they travel to Fitchburg State for a pair of games beginning at 12 p.m.
