Softball Earns Second Seed in 2019 MASCAC Tournament

Framingham, Mass. – The 2019 Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference (MASCAC) Co-Regular Season Champion Framingham State University softball team will be the second seed in the 2019 MASCAC Championship Tournament which will be played this week.       

The Rams finished the 2019 regular season with a 20-18 overall record including a 12-2 mark in league play.  The Rams finished tied atop the standings with Bridgewater State, who also went 12-2 in league play, but by virtue of the league's tiebreaker policy the Bears earn the one seed and the Rams the two seed.

Sixth seed Worcester State travels to third seed Westfield State on Wednesday in one opening round game with the winner advancing to the double elimination portion of the tournament.  The Rams will host the winner of the Worcester State/Westfield State game on Friday at 4 p.m. at Maple Street Field.

The 2019 Rams were led offensively by senior Lauren Salisbury (Cranston, RI) who batted .373 on the year with 44 hits including five doubles, a triple, a homer and 27 RBI.  Sophomore Grace Caughey (Mendon, Mass.) had a solid year for the Rams batting .368 with 14 doubles, two homers and 41 RBI, while classmate Camille Desrochers (Westford, Mass.) hit .364 and leads the league with 19 doubles on the season.

The Rams were led in the circle by senior Kelsi Gunarathne (Providence, RI) who has an 11-11 record on the year. Gunarathne has tossed 134 innings with 16 complete games, 103 strikeouts and a 2.51 ERA.  Caughey is 6-7 on the season in the circle with a 4.27 ERA.

Fourth seed Fitchburg State hosts fifth seed MCLA in the other opening round game on Wednesday with the winner advancing to face top seed Bridgewater State on Friday.

Bridgewater State will host the remainder of the double elimination portion of the tournament on Saturday and Sunday. The winner of the tournament receives the MASCAC's automatic bid to the 2019 NCAA Softball Championships.
