Miller Earns 100th Career Victory as Softball Splits with Bridgewater State

Framingham, Mass. – The Framingham State University softball team took game two of a Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference (MASCAC) doubleheader by a score of 6-3 over the Bridgewater State University Bears after the Bears took the opener by a score of 6-1 at Maple Street Field.  The win for the Rams in game two was the 100th career coaching victory for head coach Larry Miller who is in his fifth season.

HOW IT HAPPENED:

Game 1 -

  • In the opener, Bridgewater State received a complete game, three-hitter by freshman pitcher Kelley Reichert (Milford, Mass.).  She allowed just the one run over seven innings, did not issue a walk and fanned one to record her fifth win of the season.
  • The Bears opened the scoring with an unearned run in the top of the third inning. Freshman Megan Sharon (East Longmeadow, Mass.) plated junior Samantha Mulcahy (Taunton, Mass.) with a fielder's choice.
  • The Bears tacked on two more in the fifth.  Mulcahy singled with one out and scored all the from first on an RBI double by Sharon.  Senior Jenny Heller (Taunton, Mass.) followed with a base hit scoring Sharon for the 3-0 lead.
  • Bridgwater State added three in the sixth as Shannon Grindle (Halifax, Mass.) singled home a run and Courtney Gouveia (Taunton, Mass.) added two run double.
  • Junior Mycala Moody (North Attleboro, Mass.) broke up the shutout with a solo homer in the bottom of the sixth inning for the Rams.
  • Senior Kelsi Gunarathne (North Providence, RI) took the loss in the circle giving up six runs, five earned, on eight hits with two walks and three strikeouts.

 

Game 2 -

  • In game two, Gunarathne picked up the win in relief for the Rams as she allowed one run on three hits with a walk and three strikeouts in 3 2/3 innings of work.
  • Bridgewater took the lead in the top of the second on Grindle's two run single.
  • The Rams tied the game in the bottom of the frame on a two run single by junior Kaylea Sherman (North Attleboro, Mass.).
  • The Rams capitalized on a Bear throwing error in the bottom of the fifth to score the go-ahead run.  Sherman reached on the error with runners on second and third and senior Lauren Salisbury (Cranston, RI) scored from second on the play.
  • The Rams pushed across three runs in the bottom of the sixth extending the lead to 6-3. Sophomore Grace Caughey (Mendon, Mass.) singled home a pair of runs and freshman Farrah Adam (West Springfield, Mass.) plated a run with a base hit.
  • Mulcahy singled and scored on a double by Gouveia in the top of the sevent to reach the final margin.
  • Reichert worked four innings of relief and gave up four runs on eight hits with a walk and two strikeouts.
  • Sherman finished the game 2-for-3 with a double and three RBI to pace the Rams' 12 hit attack in game two.  Sophomore Camille Desrochers (Westford, Mass.) was 3-for-4 in the game with a double and run scored, while Adam also finished with a pair of hits.
  • Gouveia recorded two hits for the Bears in the game.

The Rams are back in action on Tuesday when they travel to Brandeis for a pair on non-conference games at 3 p.m., while the Bears host MCLA on Monday for a pair of MASCAC games at 3 p.m.
