Softball No-Hit by MIT in Opening Round of NCAA Tournament

Cambridge, Mass. – The Framingham State University softball team was defeated 2-0 this afternoon by host MIT in an opening round contest at the Cambridge Regional of the 2018 NCAA Division III Softball Championship Tournament.

With the win, MIT improves to 34-7-1 and will face No. 18 Tufts University tomorrow morning at 11:00 a.m. in the winner's bracket, while Framingham State will play UMass-Boston in an elimination game at 1:30 p.m.

MIT junior Ravenne Nasser (Methuen, Mass.) and freshman Colleen Campbell (Snoqualmie, Wash.) combined to throw a no-hitter,    

The Engineers scored one run in the bottom of the first inning and that is all of the offense they would need in today's victory over the Rams. Devon Goetz (Rockville, Md.) earned a one out walk, moved to second on a sacrifice bunt by Amanda Lee (Saratoga, Calif.) and scored on a double down the left field line by Sarah Von Ahn (West Linn, Ore.).

Nasser walked senior Dayna Marchant (East Bridgewater, Mass.) in the first and sophomore Kirsten Dick (Tewksbury, Mass.) in the third, which accounted for the only runners to get on base for Framingham State in the game.

MIT added an insurance run in the bottom of the sixth. Madi Pickett (Santa Barbara, Calif.) began the frame with a walk, then with one out Erika Anderson (Carlsbad, Calif.) singled through the right side. During Zoe Hinton's (Aurora, Colo.) at-bat and with Pickett on third, Anderson stole second and the throw sailed into centerfield which allowed Pickett to score MIT's second run of the day.

Campbell returned to the circle for the seventh and got three straight outs to secure the win, the no-hitter and her second save of the spring.

Both Nasser (19-4) and Campbell struck out five in the no-hitter. Framingham State starter Kelsi Gunarathne (Providence RI) took the loss (15-7) on six innings, six hits, two runs (one earned), two walks and two strikeouts.
