Gunarathne and Caughey Earn MASCAC Softball Weekly Honors

Framingham, Mass. – Junior pitcher Kelsi Gunarathne (Providence, RI) has been selected the Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference (MASCAC) Softball Player and Pitcher of the Week and freshman Grace Caughey (Mendon, Mass.) has been selected the MASCAC Rookie of the Week for the week ending May 6th.           

Gunarathne went 3-0 this past week en route to earning MVP honors for the 2018 MASCAC Softball Tournament.  Gunarathne led the Rams to their second straight tournament title after tossing 21 innings, allowing just 16 hits and not surrendering a single run on the week.  Gunarathe went the distance against Westfield State allowing just five hits with 10 strikeouts earning the victory in a round two match-up. She followed that up going seven innings allowing just seven hits with five strikeouts in a 5-0 semifinal win over top seed Worcester State. She closed the week going seven shutout innings allowing just four hits with 13 strikeouts as the Rams defeated Westfield State 1-0 in the finals of the MASCAC Tournament.

Caughey batted .545 (6-11) with a double, home run, three runs scored and five RBI with a .909 slugging percentage during the Rams MASCAC Tournament Title run.  Caughey went two-for-four with a double and three RBI in the Rams 7-0 quarterfinal win over Westfield State. She went three-for-four with two runs scored, a homer and two RBI in a semifinal win over Worcester State and closed the tournament going one-for-three in the championship game.
